  1. So placed the old 921198-1, the old bell on the new engine. The starter hole position is different than the 921198-2, also have a 921198 without the -# that I will check out. I guess they put the -1,-2 for a reason. Anyway now able to use the starter I wanted.
  2. Flanges are the same. I do have a theory, I’ll share tomorrow when I get the engine back out.

  4. 1st pic below NOS a bell housing thickness at starter opening 2nd pic starter opening thickness of old bell 3rd pic new bell housing surface to teeth depth 4th pic old bell surface to gear teeth depth so not a big difference. I do believe my problem is the opening in the new bell is about an 1/8 of an inch higher than the old bell.
  5. Thanks all for the input. Ok I’ll check thickness and depth of flywheel from mounting surface. I believe it is not able to travel its full potential cause the teeth are not lining up. I’ll be taking engine back out Saturday to swap bell housings if nothing else.
  6. Yes I spoke to Jens earlier, he seem to think they maybe the same and the starter needed some wiggling in the hole, but it is a nice secure fit. So I am trying to prove out the two if they are in fact the same. I am working on getting the bell off the old engine so I can check them side by side. My suspicion is that there maybe a difference. If so I’ll install the old bell housing
  7. Bought a flathead T214SR crate motor from 1967 to install in my WC54 Ambulance from 1943. You maybe familiar with MASH. So I swapped out the 172 tooth flywheel for a 146 so I could install my lever actuated starter. They are appropriately paired. But the starter is not engaging, it is grinding. My suspicion is the bell housing maybe different. 921198-1 (1943) and the other is 921198-2 (1967). The starter worked fine in the 921198-1. Is someone familiar enough to say if they are the same?
