48WingNut Posted December 17, 2006 Report Posted December 17, 2006 How can I tell that I actually have a 230 engine in my B-1-D-126 pickup? I checked the engine numbers (T146-16164) and can't find out any info for it. I also purchased a carb rebuild kit at my local auto parts store and after taking apart the carb I found out the rebuilt kit was for a Carter carb and mine has a Stromberg on it. Is this the correct engine and carb for this truck? Any help would be greatly appreciated. 48WN Quote
Reg Evans Posted December 17, 2006 Report Posted December 17, 2006 Good news. The T146 engine is for a 48-49 1 Ton and is a 230. Quote
48WingNut Posted December 17, 2006 Author Report Posted December 17, 2006 Thanx Reg! I'm was pretty sure it was still the original engine. But not totally. Heading to the Auto Parts store tomorrow to check on a rebuild kit for the Stromberg carb. Quote
Guest clueless Posted December 23, 2006 Report Posted December 23, 2006 Just to make things confusing, 50 Motor Truck manual does show B-1-D with a T-146 230, but only for 48 (manual supposedly covers 36-49, but doesn't show any tonnage for the various models). In fact, that's the only 36-49 model it shows with a T-146, but I understand it's limited to the "mainstream street/road" models, and may not include specialty or low-production models. If it's a help, it lists the major specs, Tune-Up and valve data, piston, ring, bearing clearances, journal diameters (but, as you could guess, no Carb info). Quote
48WingNut Posted December 23, 2006 Author Report Posted December 23, 2006 Thanx clueless. I'm guessing your right on the engine being used for street/road models. Although this is a one ton it only has a 3 speed tranny in it. I'm pretty sure its the original engine. This truck is in excellent shape for it's age and doesn't appear to have been abused at all. But who knows what's been changed around on it. Thanx again! And Merry Christmas. 48WN Quote

Don Coatney Posted December 29, 2006 Report Posted December 29, 2006 Measure it, 23 small 217 25 big, 230, 250, 265 A 230 CI engine is not a big block (25 1/2" long) unless it is Caniadian. Quote
bach4660 Posted December 29, 2006 Report Posted December 29, 2006 How can I tell that I actually have a 230 engine in my B-1-D-126 pickup? mine has a Stromberg on it. Is this the correct engine and carb for this truck? I only have B2 info, but the Stromberg was factory for the D2D-s. The B2B and B2C got the Carter carbs. For the Stromberg the manual shows the exploded view and gives the float level, but not much else on the carb Quote
48WingNut Posted December 31, 2006 Author Report Posted December 31, 2006 Well according to serial numbers I do have 230 engine. As far as the carb being stock i'm not sure but is no big deal. I finished installing the rebuilt carb yesterday and also new spark plugs (since the ones in it were pretty bad and designed more for a garden tractor!). Man it runs like a champ plus it has much more power than before. (yeah i'm grin'n) . Now to figure out some wiring and wiper problems and she's ready for the road. Figure I need to drive it some before tearing it down for painting. Thanx for all your help figuing this puppy out! 48WN Quote
Reg Evans Posted December 31, 2006 Report Posted December 31, 2006 48 WN, That's one tough lookin TRUCK! Are ya sure ya need to tear it down? Looks good the way it is. Quote
48WingNut Posted December 31, 2006 Author Report Posted December 31, 2006 Yeah Reg it is in great shape for it's age. From a distance it looks good. But up close it needs a paint job. I don't plan on doing a complete resto on it. Just paint and maybe some undercoating to keep it in good shape. Need to so some minor wiring on it and figure out why the wipers only partially work. I'd really like to find out more on the history of this truck. I bought it off Ebay back in September from an older gentleman that developed alzheimers and couldn't drive anymore. He owned it for 16 years and was his daily driver! He purchased it from someone in Florida so i'm guessing that is why it is such good shape rustwise. Still kinda stumped why a 3 speed and not a 4 though. But my guy at the Napa store figures that since it might have came from Florida that maybe it was used in the orange groves and didn't need that low of a gear. Is there anyway I can find out excactly who bought this truck? Would be interesting to know. Anyways thanx for the compliment. I was so nervous about buying on ebay but when the carrier showed up with it....well lets just say I was a grin'n! Hope you have a Happy New Year! 48WN Quote
Mario Loya B1B Posted January 1, 2007 Report Posted January 1, 2007 48WN, Looks like you had as much luck as I did with your eBay purchase. I really didn't know what to expect until the truck actually arrived and was more than I had hoped for. Also much to my surprise, 4 months later I received a phone call from the previous owner on Christmas day to wish my football team luck (NY Jets). Quote
48WingNut Posted January 1, 2007 Author Report Posted January 1, 2007 Nice truck Mario. I like red and black! Can't wait to get a nice shiny coat of green on mine! Quote
Steven Hood Posted January 1, 2007 Report Posted January 1, 2007 48wingnut, Great looking truck! I'm just a little partial to the 1-ton trucks. I hope mine looks that good some day. Steve Quote
48WingNut Posted January 1, 2007 Author Report Posted January 1, 2007 Thanx Steve....when I set out looking for a truck I just wanted a pilot house cab. I really didn't know a 9 foot box existed until I found this one. Just made me want it more. Your truck looks in pretty good shape. Little elbow grease and some extra change and their ready to roll! 48WN Quote

I am in your area (sort of) fairly offen. My brother lives in Bloomingdale, just east of Kalamazoo. Steve Quote
