knighthawk Posted June 29, 2008 Report Posted June 29, 2008 I'm familiar with that crap ! One suggestion : before you go through the expense of rinseing and degassing and welding the tank, try some J B Weld , or solder, with GOOD hot soldering iron. I,ve soldered many gas tanks, and no need to de gas them. Just be sure to get it really clean, but DON"T use a grinder ! Use a wire bush to 'tin ' it first...........any questions.....just ask Quote
YukonJack Posted June 29, 2008 Report Posted June 29, 2008 I've had good luck in the past with JB Weld or 2 part ribbon epoxy for gas tanks. Quote
knighthawk Posted June 29, 2008 Report Posted June 29, 2008 $16 from the local yard sounds good IF it's good, on the other hand , $100 for a brand new one would save a lot of work. IF you decided to repair the old one, I would paint it with "OSPHO" (phousphoric acid ) which will 'encapsuate' and stop the rust, but will not always work on salt rust. I know in the garages, I've seen them solder pennies over the rust holes . Like I said, Ive soldered ( and welded )many tanks, even cut them open to clean them out and soldered them back together. But ....... that 's like working on a tank all week to save a few dollars........ Quote
james curl Posted June 29, 2008 Report Posted June 29, 2008 At our semi local (30 miles north) pick and pull they remove all of the gas tanks and place them in the trunk or the bed of pick ups. Check to see if yours might do the same. Quote
John Mulders Posted June 30, 2008 Report Posted June 30, 2008 just today threw away the old tank. Had it welded a year or so ago but decided to use a new tank instead. Did not treat the interior of the tank. Today I tossed it in the back of the truck to see the rusted metal around the patched places fall apart. Glad I did spent some money on a new tank , better safe than sorry. John Quote
knighthawk Posted June 30, 2008 Report Posted June 30, 2008 just a word of caution here, guys.... be careful when the tank is on the floor jack, especially with some gas in it yet, if the tank slips, it WILL fall on your trouble lite ! I know of two instances for sure, where this has happened....Once in a 'professional ' shop , burned the shop down, and several custom cars with it ....the other in a home garage, burned the garage and half the house ! I've had the tank slip myself also, but be aware of the trouble lite !!! Quote
