I ordered a HEI distributer from Langdons the other day. Included with the setup is a little square coil. I don't like the looks of it and wanted to get a regular looking coil from them but they were out of stock.

Do I need something special or will a regular 12 volt coil work?

What sort of plug wires should I get?

It's for the 251 in my 52 1/2 ton.

I think the round coil from langdon's is a regular Ford coil, made for hei ignition systems.

I mounted mine on the firewall under a finned coil cover to match my head and air cleaner cover. I ran the wires through the firewall behind the coil, to keep it clean.

I used a regular set of plug wires from the auto parts store.

Thanks Pete. So ya think if I just go in to Napa and ask for a Ford coil made for HEI they'll hand over the right part. I fear  the "Blank Stare" I get without a part number.

Yep, or you could drop Tom Langdon and e-mail and ask him what part number or application it is really for...

What are the plug wires from? I am having to look through lots of listings on the NAPA site and have not found the ones that I think will work. Did you have to modify the cables?

thanks

Kai, on the HEI on my 55 chev 235 I/6 I used a wire set from a 200 ci in Ford I/6. We had an 82 Ford Granada with Ford HEI and a 200 cu in I/6. The distrubitor is located about mid engine on the left side of the engine same as mopar flat head I/6. The wires have 90 degree terminals at the distributor and straight terminals at the plugs. You could go to the auto parts store and buy straight boots and terminals to replace the 90 degree terminals at the distributor.

Kai-

I just went into my local Carquest auto parts place and told them I wanted a set of wires for a 6 cylinder to fit the GM HEI cap, and with 90 degree terminals at the spark plug end. They pulled them off the shelf, but I don't know the application other than they were for a GM six.

I think I'm going to put my RAJA tips back on, but with the same type wires. I have an extra set of the wires, and will keep the 90 degree boot wires in the trunk in case my RAJA tips don't like a rain storm. I like the traditional hot rod look of these tips, but man they pack a wollop if you aren't paying attention! Langdon didn't think they would work with the high voltage of the HEI, but they seemed to work fine when I had them on the engine. He thought they would arc to ground. Maybe it was OK because of the alloy head. I didn't drive the car in the rain though... These tips make it very easy to cut the plug wires to length, they just screw onto the end of the wire and are re-useable if you change wires in the future.

Here's a pic of the tips with clear red wire:

I think the guys here will be able to get the plug wires I need for me. In the States the kids who work at the parts store all have cars and an interest in cars, Here in Mexico they only have an interest in cars. Even the guys who work for the dealers do not have cars. Thus, you try and describe something they have no idea. Now that we have an Autozone, I can look it up on there web site and take the part number to the store.

Thanks, I have printed the pic and next time I get to the States I will try and get a set. They look good, as does your motor. If I ever get enough cash I want to get an aluminum head.

I haven't installed my Langdon HEI setup yet, so I took out the round coil and unpacked it. All it says on it is "476T, 12V, Made in Mexico". There isn't any indication of either the orginal manufacturer or customer.
