Niel Hoback Posted December 12, 2008 Report Posted December 12, 2008 Here at the bottom end of Lake Michigan, last night got to a brisk 14F. The high today, maybe 22, but they are predicting 50F for Sunday. At least we don't get bored with the weather. Quote
RobertKB Posted December 13, 2008 Report Posted December 13, 2008 Here's what we have this morning. It feels much colder than the thermometer (Farenheit on the left, Celsius on the right) indicates as there is a strong wind and the windchill factor is brutal. Not much snow on the garage roof as it faces north and the snow gets blown off. Snow has tapered off but it is to get even colder over the next two days and stay cold for the forseeable future. If it wasn't for the snow I would get my trusty '48 Dodge D25 Club Coupe out as it runs fine in the cold. However, I won't take it on slippery roads. Guess it is time to work on the cars in the heated garage, do jigsaws, read, light the fire, drink some spiced eggnog, and enjoy. Quote

Brendan D25 Posted December 13, 2008 Report Posted December 13, 2008 Well, looks like the weather thread is revived:) 12 Celcius in Newfoundland today with lots of rain and wind. The New England States are getting hit hard with ice storms, hope everyone is ok. Brendan. Quote
Captain Neon Posted December 14, 2008 Report Posted December 14, 2008 We lost all our snow cover with temperatures near 60*F the past two days. The temperatures are supposed to start dropping Sunday afternoon. We are expecting temperatures hovering around 0*F by Monday evening. It will not be good for the grass to get so cold and have no snow cover. Quote

Captain Neon Posted December 14, 2008 Report Posted December 14, 2008 Here's what Colorado has looked like for the last several days.........!!! I hate winter Thanks for reminding me why I am glad to be in Missouri. We are at the same latitude, but not a flake left on the yard. I'll miss Colorado this summer when I am shooting mosquitoes with my shotgun and swimming in the humid air. After one week in Missouri, I knew I was gonna miss Colorado's almost perpetual blue skies. Tim it was brutal here last night and again today. It was -15 and with the windchill it was -41, it was so darn cold, I was doing rounds at work outside last night every 2 hours, any exposed skin could freeze in ess than a minute, I was dressed for it, my face still was exposed, and would get so cold in a few minutes it would turn red and feel hot. I saw a cat outside at 2:00 AM, we have cats at this place as it is a farm, I tried unsuccessfully to catch it a number of times before I gave up, hopefully it took cover and didn't die, I felt sorry for some of the cattle too, they were behind shelters but man that wind was wicked. -15 In our area -41 with the windchill 450 miles to the southeast in Minneapolis temp 34f go figure............Fred Quote
Frank Elder Posted December 14, 2008 Report Posted December 14, 2008 Cows are tough, but dang you gotta feel for them. When I was but a lad we had a bad storm in Lake City, Ia. Sleet snow mixed with driving winds caused some of our cattle to wander looking for protection, went right through the fence in the opposite direction of the lean-to. Their eye lashes were frozen shut and were blindly seeking cover. The railroad is only a 1/2 mile from the pasture, 6 steers were hit by a train that night out of 15. Needless to say it was my job to round them up after that. Doggone cows enaway! Quote

Cattle are tough, they can temps down ral low if they have something to block the wind, I have seen some famrers keep Sows outside in covered pens, with lots of straw, but Hogs are 99% kept indoors here in Manitoba. My dogs were outside all the time too, insulated doghouse, straw, and a 250 watt brooder lamp would keep them warm..........Fred Quote
Frank Elder Posted December 14, 2008 Report Posted December 14, 2008 Hope that darn cat didn't find a warm engine to nap on, vvrrttt, reoow! Never had the cat in the fan but have heard plenty of stories. Quote
RobertKB Posted December 14, 2008 Report Posted December 14, 2008 Fred, it sounds like you had what we had Friday and Saturday in Alberta. Today is very cold but there is no wind and it is pleasant outside if you are dressed for it. I lit the fireplace about an hour ago and will soon drink some spiced eggnog. Probably fall asleep for a while. Winter is not so bad if you make your mind up you are not going to get depressed by it. The only regret I have in winter is that my old flatties have to sit and wait for warmer weather or at least until the roads are OK. Quote
Frank Elder Posted December 14, 2008 Report Posted December 14, 2008 Robert, does the term Alberta clipper have to do with a ship or a weather condition? Quote
55 Fargo Posted December 14, 2008 Author Report Posted December 14, 2008 Robert, does the term Alberta clipper have to do with a ship or a weather condition? Frankie an Alberta clipper, is a winter storm, but is not as severe and much short lived, than a Colorado Low, which bring wicked storms to the prairie region of Maniotba.........Fred Quote
RobertKB Posted December 15, 2008 Report Posted December 15, 2008 Robert, does the term Alberta clipper have to do with a ship or a weather condition? As Fred said, it is weather related. Lots of snow and cold and usually moving east and south fairly quickly. We love to see them leave so someone else can have the pleasure. Another term we have in Canada is Pineapple Express which means lots of heavy rain and stormy weather on the west coast of Canada in places like Vancouver and Victoria. The Pineapple Express originates in the oceans surrounding Hawaii, hence the name. Just typing Hawaii makes me want to go back!! Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 15, 2008 Report Posted December 15, 2008 Sunday, in good ole Joplin, MO......when we got out of church around noon, the thermometer in the car said 71 degrees. By suppertime, it was down to around 20. A little rain/freezing rain during the late afternoon. Sounds as if the east part of the country has gotten the same type freezing rain--ice storms that we got about this time in 2007. Those are definitely no fun. The local electric utility company was sending their tree trimmer people out lately to do preventive trimming of trees hanging over power lines, as they took down many lines last time. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted December 15, 2008 Report Posted December 15, 2008 Fred, your weather made it down here last night. Yesterday we had mid 40's with light rain. Much of our snow has melted away. Teh cold front came through last night. This morning 3 degrees with strong winds. I haven't seen any wind chill figures, but it's DAMN COLD. Merle Quote
