48 Plymouth wiper Problem

Recommended Posts

My Plymouth wiper arm has stripped out and every time I turn on my wipers the arm falls off. I have had the car 23 plus years and it looks like it has different wiper arms than the original ones at least from what I can tell from the ones I ordered from Andy which didn't fit. The arm is the right length of 10". I have look on many site like Summit racing, Jegs, Rock Auto and others. I can't seem to find any that are right. I may have to also get the arm and mechanism that fits the vacuum motor also because the part that is stripped is the part that come through from under the dash. My question is has any body had this problem and is there a different vehicle wiper arms that will fit the Plymouth and where can I find the wiper parts for the mechanism for the motor.

Hi Larry,

I'm not sure what physical/mechanical differences there are between vacuum and electric wipers; I think our cars may have had both? Attached, is a pic of one of the vacuum wipers on my '47 P15 Convertible, with a 9" refill. In December of 2003, I put new Anco N-22R wipers on it. Some other numbers I have are:

NAPA Trico 51 Series
Trico 33-122(12")
Trico 33-110 (10'")

I have to question the last two numbers, as the 9" looks right on my windshield. I also have some additional information on a 'Parts Cross-match List'

www.hamptoncoach.com/catalog/21.htm (8 inch blade/electric motors)

TRICO Classic Catalog
#33-101 Blade (10 inches) -- wrist action arm
#33-122 Blade (12 inches)
#60-750 Arm or
#60-751 Arm

ANCO
#20-9 Blade (9 inches) -- Uses wrist action connection and close to original size 0f 8.25 inches for FFPW

Part Number 33901 (Classic Style) 11 inch but identical to FFPW

For what it's worth - Years ago, I made a wiper fit by cutting a notch in the top, to receive the hook end of the arm.

(The wiper is resting on its side against the windshield. The arm in position against the windshield.)

Hi Larry,

I understood from your post that the main problem is that the pivot coming through the cowling is damaged or stripped and wiper blade arms won't stay attached properly. I cannot promise anything as it has been a few  months since I was out to see my friendly auto supply place (aka: Donor Car) but the attached photo I took some time ago seems to show the wiper pivots still in place on the cowl. This was a vacuum system as I have the pump and perhaps the arms in my spare parts bin but not the pivots. If you would like I can go and take a look and give you some better pictures or measures. Just let me know. Car is a 1947 Dodge Coupe Canadian Model.

in the post that Don Smith showed with his wiper blade the hook style wiper arm take the style wiper blade called a Dead Locker blade.  This is what I have on my 1939 Desoto and these are the factory style wiper arms and blades.

I do have several 10 inch blades which were the correct length for my car but I can also use the 11 inch wiper blades.

Thanks for the reply and numbers you submitted to me I will definitely look into your suggestions but I do need the pivot arms and the mechanical parts that go through the panel where the wiper arms hook too

Thanks for the reply I looked through post on here from the past to maybe find what others have done. I know that over the years people that had these cars before we purchased them have done many things to upgrade the mechanical systems and now as the new owners have to try and find where they got that part and sometimes it can be a pain.

I don't know if this info is any use but there is a place in the USA, Newport Engineering who specialise in aftermarket wiper conversions which I know is NOT what you are inquiring about but it maybe worthwhile contacting them............andyd

I sent you a PM as I think I may have access to what you are looking for. No guarantees but a possibility.

It is imperative that you sort your parts and log what name brand and part number or if borrowed from a donor what year, make and model the part is from.  You think you will remember all this....good intentions but I assure you there will be discrepancies later.    The van when built I have over 4 pages of single line item changes, additions from stock configuration.  It is a long list and will serve me down the road.  It will transfer with the vehicle if sold.  The truck I am now working was from a man who said I recall all the parts....yes he did he recalled using a flywheel off another donor but not year make and model and that list of donor stuff was long and full of holes.   Has taken lots of research to rebuilt this list for prosperity and ease of maintenance.  SO if anyone is doing such a build, please write all this stuff down in a journal or notebook...you will thank yourself many times over.  The journal has been a nice record to refresh just how I did a task also....or for those gaps in the project, a manner to refresh your memory and not overlook a step needed.   Have fun...but do keep a record.

Had the same problem with an old vehicle of mine. Drilled and tapped a hole for a set screw in the arm where it slides on to the pivot. Worked in a pinch anyway.
