Everett Posted May 30 Report Posted May 30 I purchased a 48 chrysler new yorker coupe last year. The guy I bought it from had installed a sbc 383 stroker and 350t transmission, because the car was a roller when he bought it. So, it has a solid drive train with only 250 miles on it. I am working on restoring it and doing some minor modifications. I am almost finished rewiring everything. And about to start replacing glass. Finally to my question. The side windows have the vent window in them. I want to know if I can get rid of the vent window and just replace the glass with a regular door glass, or if I would have to do additional modifications to make the regular glass fit? Quote
Cannuck Posted May 31 Report Posted May 31 I wouldn't get rid of the vent it gets warm in these old beasts and they direct cool air at you . Just my opinion. Quote
Everett Posted May 31 Author Report Posted May 31 Thanks for the thought. I understand that they get hot. I am planning on installing ac down the line. Also I am not planning on any long drives, probably just to or from car shows. (Not that I will be winning) Maybe some night drives on the interstate, just so I can open it up and little and let the engine really breathe. Quote
Solution Los_Control Posted May 31 Solution Report Posted May 31 To answer the question, I would say yes you can .... Over on the truck side I think it may have been a option at some point to not have the vent windows .... glass is available both ways. I believe on the trucks, if you remove the vent .... then there is another modification or metal that needs to be removed. Probably the mounts the vent windows bolt to. .... just have to look at it and see what would be in the way for the window to go up and down .... move the front track forward. Once you have all that figured out, make a template that works in the space and have the glass shop make the glass using the template. Quote
Everett Posted May 31 Author Report Posted May 31 Sounds good, thanks I now know what I need to do. I after I get it done I promise pictures Quote

I after I get it done I promise pictures We love pictures My thoughts are, anything is possible with enough time and effort. You will have several challenges to make it happen. Easy enough to cut out and remove metal ... if there is room to access the area. Fabricating and moving the front track seems like it could be a challenge, mainly because of limited access to get a welder and clamps and such into a titgh space and actually see and be able to get it done will be a trick. Some might just remove the outer shell that the door panel covers to get access and then just weld it back in place when done. While you are there messing with it, maybe just get the guts out of a modern door and install electric windows into it? Naturally all this should be done before paint .... you can always touch up the paint when finished though. Just possible when you remove the door cards and make plans for moving the front track .... you might grow really fond of the beauty of vent windows Quote
matt167 Posted May 31 Report Posted May 31 This is done fairly regularly in customs. You need to modify the track and regulator as well. It’s more work than I would ever attempt to eliminate a couple 1/4 windows Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted June 1 Report Posted June 1 LARGE single window with out the vent rolled half way down ..slam the door closed....cracked glass. Common problem back in the day on the B series Dodge trucks. Make sure the track guides and fuzzy strips support the glass perfectly. I'd leave the vent. I had a 46 eight cylinder N' Yorker for over 30 years...loved the vents. Quote
