rcl700 Posted November 18, 2023 Report Posted November 18, 2023 Does anyone have a picture if the rear face of the guage cluster? I'm trying to figure out how to remove it without breaking anything. Is it bolted in by the choke and throttle cables? How is the top of the cluster secured? Quote
Ivan_B Posted November 18, 2023 Report Posted November 18, 2023 (edited) Do you have the OEM service manual available? I am pretty sure that the cluster is bolted to the dash panel, from the back. You just need to undo a few small nuts, all around, holding it in place. The cables should have nothing to do with it, although, it might be necessary to remove them to slide the cluster out from under the dash. Later: my mistake about the cables, but here you go: Edited November 18, 2023 by Ivan_B Quote
rcl700 Posted November 18, 2023 Author Report Posted November 18, 2023 Perfect, that's what I needed to see. I could not see the top mount Quote
andyd Posted November 19, 2023 Report Posted November 19, 2023 Yeh....... if the high beam indicator is centred & above the instrument cluster then the high beam socket will have a screw thread that screws onto the high beam outer decorative piece with that bracket sandwiched between the socket & outside decorative piece........pull the high beam wire from the socket, unscrew the socket and the instrument cluster will come away once the lower nuts are undone......at least thats what its been like on the mopars I've played with........andyd Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted November 20, 2023 Report Posted November 20, 2023 (edited) You will have to remove the temp sender fom the head and pull it thru the firewall...first removing the firewall clamp ring and rubber seal. Removing the temp bulb in the head might just easily come out... be gentle trying to pull it out...but if not the soft plug above the bulb needs to be removed so a screw driver can be used to wedge the sender bulb out of the head fitting. Removing the gauge from the cluster and letting it hang is risking damage to the gauge needle and face. The oil line to gauge also needs removal. Edited November 20, 2023 by Dodgeb4ya Quote
rcl700 Posted November 20, 2023 Author Report Posted November 20, 2023 Thank you for this additional information. I don't think I would have taken these steps without reading this. Perhaps I should just try re-wiring without removing the cluster. I don't want to damage the the guages. Quote
Ivan_B Posted November 20, 2023 Report Posted November 20, 2023 Are you just re-doing the wiring harness? Why would you think about taking the cluster out for this? You just need to disconnect the original wires, take them out, duplicate, and put the new ones in. I do not believe that removing the cluster is useful for any of the above ? Quote
Los_Control Posted November 20, 2023 Report Posted November 20, 2023 Just for basic maintenance after 75 years, I have had my cluster out a few times for cleaning and oiling. And needed repairs. Quote
Ivan_B Posted November 20, 2023 Report Posted November 20, 2023 Yes, that makes sense. But the TS is just redoing the wiring at this time. The oldest cluster I ever removed was a 1953, but I do not recall dealing with the oil line, etc... Maybe it was already an electric sensor-based or had no oil pressure gauge on it... Quote
Bob Ritter Posted November 20, 2023 Report Posted November 20, 2023 I will tell you what helped when putting the dash back together, the cap nut for the high beam indicator is real hard to tighten because there is not a lot of room. I drilled an extra hole in the cap so I could put a nail through it and use it to tighten it. It works great... 1 Quote
Bob Ritter Posted November 20, 2023 Report Posted November 20, 2023 RC, They have some after market dash knobs on Ebay, they go on like the light switch with a set screw. They look pretty nice... Quote
