Jny85csh Posted October 29, 2023 Report Posted October 29, 2023 Hi all. I have a 1950 Dodge Coronet with the m-6 gyromatic. The car’s drivetrain is all original. The issue I’m having is when I put the transmission in reverse and release the clutch, the car will reverse for about 12” before it locks up and won’t go any further in reverse and will roll forward. If the car is on an incline the car won’t even roll backwards. If I don’t start the car and push it back in neutral, it rolls just fine. If the car is started and in neutral it won’t roll backwards either. Any advice would be appreciated. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted October 29, 2023 Report Posted October 29, 2023 The E-brake shoes inside the trans brake drum are grabbing and hanging up... This if you have a late 1950 model Dodge using the internal E-brake shoes. Early models use a external brake drum brake band. They generally never hang/lock up when backing up. Quote
Doug&Deb Posted October 30, 2023 Report Posted October 30, 2023 There is an adjustment procedure in the shop manual for the e-brake. Try that first. I’ve never run into that problem with my M-6 so I’m curious what you find out. Also the Imperial club website has downloadable content that may be useful. Good luck and keep us posted. Quote
kencombs Posted October 30, 2023 Report Posted October 30, 2023 It may be a combination of adjustment/alignment of the e-brake coupled with a fluid leak from the rear seal. Just like wheel brakes, oils on the lining will cause grabbing. Counterintuitive, but slick oil makes them stick! Quote
Jny85csh Posted November 2, 2023 Author Report Posted November 2, 2023 Why do you think it will roll fine backwards when the engine is not running, but when the engine is running you can’t roll the car backwards? Maybe a linkage adjustment? Quote
