Stargrinder Posted October 10, 2023 Report Posted October 10, 2023 Hey all ... I am trying to cast the net as wide as I can to find a few parts (I honestly did not think it would be as challenging as it has been). I am trying to restore a 1950 Desoto S-14. I have been on a quest to find the necessary components to connect a steering wheel to the steering column and all the mechanisms that go under the center emblem that makes the horn work. I have a steering wheel, the horn ring, and the wheel horn button center emblem (see picture). But I do not have all the stuff to connect the horn ring (springs, spacers, bearings, cushion, nuts) to the steering wheel nor do I have the stuff to attach the steering wheel to the steering column. Currently the car has a Plymouth steering wheel. I am hearing that the Plymouth and Desoto internal mechanisms for the horn are different. If anyone has a lead on the parts that I need it would be greatly appreciated. Quote
Sniper Posted October 10, 2023 Report Posted October 10, 2023 You might try French Lake Auto Parts. Quote
Stargrinder Posted October 10, 2023 Author Report Posted October 10, 2023 Sniper, I already tried there. The cars they had that matched what I needed had the steering wheels already removed and/or the internal components were not available. Thank you though. I will have to just keep searching. Quote

Stargrinder Posted October 11, 2023 Author Report Posted October 11, 2023 Thanks for the info. I will try both of those options. Quote
andyd Posted October 12, 2023 Report Posted October 12, 2023 Do you have a parts manual showing the actual parts that you need.......that would help people trying to compare the other mopar brand bits to the DeSoto parts you want. Quote
Stargrinder Posted October 13, 2023 Author Report Posted October 13, 2023 So after consulting with one of the fine members of this forum they pointed out that I am dealing with a "Frankenstein" of steering wheel parts. It looks like I have a '50 horn ring and a '50 horn center emblem ... but the steering wheel I have might be a '52. So my search and quest continue. And I don't have any of the internal parts. The car currently has a Plymouth steering wheel but I am not sure of the year. So I am not even sure if the internals of that will work with the steering wheel components I have. The quest continues. Andy, I actually have three reference materials that have been trying to use. However without having images it is a bit hard to confirm what parts I really need. I have two parts manuals and a shop manual but they are not revealing what I am trying to figure out. The parts catalog had a drawing but again did not contain the info I need but gave me an idea of what is behind the horn button. The parts list manuals only had a list of part numbers but no schematic for the steering wheel components. The shop manual did not have a good schematic of the steering wheel components. So I am left doing a lot of guessing and searching. If you know of a good parts manual to use or can send the image from the one you have that would be greatly appreciated. Quote

Dodgeb4ya Posted October 15, 2023 Report Posted October 15, 2023 You have a real challenge mixing and matching 1949/50 and 1951/52 wheels and horn parts. I did the same on a 1950 Chrysler. I was lucky as I had saved plenty of parts from Chrysler parts cars. Still was not a easy to figure out job. Good luck.? Quote
Los_Control Posted October 15, 2023 Report Posted October 15, 2023 Really talking a long shot but might be worth a shot. This steering wheel was posted here awhile back and is advertised on another site. .... Seems the add is still up. He was asking $120 for it ..... since then he has added $60 in the topic ..... Did he cut the price in 1/2? Dunno. Probably wont have the pieces you need, I see it is located in Maryland .... Might be worth talking to them. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/vintage-1949-dodge-18-steering-wheel-original-deco-art.1298707/ Quote

I currently have a Plymouth steering wheel on the car and I am trying to get it back to a proper DeSoto steering wheel. I may have another long shot lead that I am going to follow. Quote
