Threw the belt on the 47 Saratoga. Nothing too high tech? Just wondering if there is a trick to getting it over the lower pulley short of pulling the shroud?

1946-48 Chrysler eights are really tight doing a water pump or belt job.

You need to remove the fan shroud for  belt replacement...possibly the fan too.

Cannot remember on the fan.

There are three fan shroud screws on the inside edge of the shroud.

This is not a fun job!

Many times those shrouds are removed and never replaced....wonder why.

You need it though for better cooling required on the straight eights.

Thats what I was afraid of Dodgeb4ya, I'm not seeing how the flats on the lower damper is going to help clear the belt. Oh well, I'll find out tomorrow if the parts store is open. Offhand, what is the right size for the belt? As near as I can measure from the pieces left over it is 48 inches long by 1/2 inch wide but the pulleys look like they would take a wider belt than 1/2".

I had occasion to buy a new belt for my power steering concoction.  I ordered three belts from Grainger, to cover the possible range of lengths. I kept the right size and returned the other two.  Two trips to Grainger's but only one battle with the pulleys.

The 1946-50 Chrysler eight belt is the same size  as all 1946-50 Ply/Dodge/DeSoto cars also using the wide belt.

part number for the correct belt is 24489 if anyone is interested. There may be different prefixes depending on company selling ( Gates TR24489, NAPA P-24489, etc)
