Doug&Deb Posted May 7, 2023 Report Posted May 7, 2023 Two questions. There is a snap ring on the z bar where it attaches to the frame. How does it install? My picture isn’t clear and it’s not helping. This is the end with the two spherical bushings. Also with everything hooked up the pedal goes to the floor and stays. What am I missing? Quote
joecoozie Posted May 7, 2023 Report Posted May 7, 2023 (edited) The pedal going to the floor and staying down sounds like you need to adjust the overcenter spring. Cannot help with the other question??? Edited May 7, 2023 by joecoozie mistake Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 7, 2023 Report Posted May 7, 2023 This is a p15 assembly but basically the same. Your spring clip is probably the type with the two ears making the install of it easier... Quote
Doug&Deb Posted May 7, 2023 Author Report Posted May 7, 2023 I’m not sure where to install the clip lol. As to the pedal going to the floor. I should have checked the new throw out bearing. The new one is different from the old. The old one is flat across the bearing end. The center section of the new one sticks out a bit maybe a half inch. I’m wondering if that could be the problem. Maybe the adjustment is too far out. I’m not sure how to adjust the over center spring but I’ll check the manual. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 7, 2023 Report Posted May 7, 2023 (edited) More pics of the two styles of clips that retain the frame side bearing halves in the torque shaft. Edited May 7, 2023 by Dodgeb4ya Quote
Doug&Deb Posted May 7, 2023 Author Report Posted May 7, 2023 The second picture. Does it go into a groove in the shaft? Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 8, 2023 Report Posted May 8, 2023 Yes....The snap ring does fit into the machined groove retaining the two bearing halves and pivot ball stud in the torque shaft. Quote
Doug&Deb Posted May 8, 2023 Author Report Posted May 8, 2023 Thanks. Now I have to figure out the other problem. The pedal goes to the floor and doesn’t disengage the clutch. I suspect the throw out bearing is shorter. I’m just not sure if there’s enough adjustment or if I need to change it. Quote
Tired iron Posted May 8, 2023 Report Posted May 8, 2023 i dont know if this helps, but a clutch throw-out bearing for a fluid drive is a different length than for a conventional manual transmission. Quote
Doug&Deb Posted May 8, 2023 Author Report Posted May 8, 2023 Yeah, I’m afraid I may have gotten the non fluid drive bearing. The question is whether I can adjust for the difference or should I pull the trans and put the old bearing in. Quote
Sniper Posted May 8, 2023 Report Posted May 8, 2023 Why not put a new bearing on the old sleeve? bearing part number 658948 fluid drive sleeve part number 867734 https://www.hiltopautoparts.com/product/nos-mopar-clutch-throw-out-bearing-sleeve-1941-54-chrysler-desoto-dodge-models-with-fluid-drive/ Prices are getting stupid Quote
Doug&Deb Posted May 9, 2023 Author Report Posted May 9, 2023 Sniper I agree. I put the old bearing back in tonight. It goes against my nature to install a new clutch and not replace the bearing but I needed to get the car out of my wife’s garage space lol. The new bearing was about 1/4 inch shorter. I’m still not getting complete disengagement but that’s a job for another day. My rebuilt engine runs and the car moved under its own power. Small victories. Quote
