DSchreiner83 Posted January 29, 2023 Report Posted January 29, 2023 Hi All -- I've been scouring the internet, but can't seem to come up with a rear brake cylinder rebuild kit for a 1940 Plymouth P10. Napa carries front brake cylinder rebuild kits, but the rear rubber inserts are a little smaller than the front - so the front kit doesn't fit. Anyone have a lead on where I can find a rebuild kit? Thanks! Quote

TodFitch Posted January 29, 2023 Report Posted January 29, 2023 My parts books show that for the P10 two different sets of rear brake cylinders were used based on serial number of the car. Unfortunately, other than original Chrysler part numbers, I don't know anything about the cylinders. Quote
kencombs Posted January 30, 2023 Report Posted January 30, 2023 If your pistons are usable the cups should be available at most any good parts store. Dorman and others make generic cups in many sizes. 2 Quote
dpollo Posted January 30, 2023 Report Posted January 30, 2023 A replacement cylinder, non stepped , is WC 17789 ( Raybestos) it has wide application and works well. needs only the small bolt holes elongated on the backing plate. It can be used front or rear, all 4 corners. On the rear you need either the hollow bolt line fitting, or the adapter used on pilothouse era rear cylinders. 2 Quote

This is the kind of stuff that makes this forum rock. 1 Quote
dpollo Posted February 2, 2023 Report Posted February 2, 2023 I recently got a 29 Model Q Plymouth and it looks like WC 17789 fits that too. Quote
moparfun Posted February 2, 2023 Report Posted February 2, 2023 When I redid the brake system on the 54, the best price that I found for the wheel cylinders was at carquest the rears were part # WCA10588 and they were39.50 each and the fronts were 29.50 each. Quote
desoto1939 Posted February 2, 2023 Report Posted February 2, 2023 I have found that a lot of part stores no longer have the rubber inner parts for the wheel cylinders. you have to have them order in the parts. Quote

Amazing..@dpollo do you mean that the backing plate holes need to be drilled? This is the adapter I've used on my '41 on the rear brakes, curious if this is the one everyone uses https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/american-grease-stick-co.-brass-adapter-3-8-24-inverted-to-7-16-24-inverted-blf-22c/22190061-p?product_channel=local&store=7989&adtype=pla_with_promotion&product_channel=local&store_code=7989&gclid=Cj0KCQiAofieBhDXARIsAHTTldoS3AjNqrhsGTxL2_0RWuxFFKa9gP8rL2WR6Xi8VCr-jDZ7HdG5YCQaAnKAEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds Edited February 5, 2023 by bacelaw Quote

Do you drill the backing plate to widen the holes to make that wheel cylinder fit, or are you saying the holes/ears on the wheel cylinders need expanding? Quote
