Doug&Deb
Turns out the problem with my old distributor was caused by the vacuum advance but not because it’s bad. The wire to the points was being rubbed against the housing from the advance causing a short. Lucky I made it home lol. It’s now fixed and I have a good spare distributor.
oldodge41
In my experience that is fairly common, although not often obvious. Glad you found it and made it right.
keithb7
Aha. The old “electrons taking the quickest path back to battery” trick. They’ll do that given the smallest opportunity. If electron movement wasn’t so hard to see with the naked eye, life for a hobby mechanic would be a lot easier. Glad you found it. Congrats!
