47 dodge 1.5 ton
Does anyone know the material used for the tie rod (SAE/ASTM/AISI)? The reason I am asking because the one on my truck has a slight bend. I have if off currently while rebuilding the front end and I am going to straighten maybe tomorrow. I can not straighten some materials with high Chrome as they have memory and may break on the press such as 4140 Chrome Moly. I am working on a WH tie rod. If anyone has straighten in the past, recommendations are welcome. Thanks, Kevin Edited January 3, 2022 by 47 dodge 1.5 ton
stylesadamson
Tie or drag link? If it is drag link I suspect it is supposed to be as my 52 B3B is OEM bent.
47 dodge 1.5 ton
I believe the book identifies as tie bar, it’s the 4 footer between the tie rod ends. Mmm— maybe supposed to have a bend for deflection?? Good point!! Got me thinking again???
Jerry Roberts
The tie rod in my 1/2 ton was just soft steel . I put it in the vise and pulled it straight . That was about 19 years ago and no problems . 1
Brent B3B
Kevin I did the same as Jerry on my “GA” I used a 6” vice and took it slow ?
47 dodge 1.5 ton
Ok— thanks guys, I started second guessing. I can get it straight if it’s soft carbon steel. We have a nice 100t press at work that I can baby it with adjustable blocks for centering the bend. I just didn’t want to shatter it( have done in the past on hardened high chrome material). The cross bar (wheel to wheel) is just a hollow tube so be very careful with that 100 ton press! You'd be better off using a large vice, a couple of 2x4s to straighten it.
47 dodge 1.5 ton
I didn’t fool with it today but believe you are correct about a tube. Just came out to the shop for a ring test.
