Pinion Preload

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I searched, but cannot seem to find an answer.  Does anyone know where to get the pinion preload shims for the rear axle?  I previously replaced the pinion bearings and went back in with the original shims, but need more.  The bearing was a little tight, and is starting to make a little noise.

Thank you,

Nick

The 4x4 shops change ring & pinions all the time and they will have plenty of extras.

Also there are shops which overhaul truck transmissions and rear axles. I've found they also rebuild car stuff too.

Thank you! I used to work in a truck/rear end shop, but unfortunately, they are now out of business.  There are not many truck shops in this area anymore.  The business does not appear to be too lucrative around here (too expensive to operate).

I was looking at the Mopar 8.75 stuff as it is a derivative of our axles, but was wondering if there were any differences in shims.  It may be time to experiment.....

Buy the shim stock sheets the thickness you need (McMaster-Carr) or a bunch of them and find a shop with a water jet cutter and have them cut them out. You can set a LOT of shims that way. I needed shims to move my timing sprocket out a bit as it sat a little deep in the crankshaft and I wanted that chain dead even. So I had my guy cut them out. He just mounts it in a board and the jet cutter does the rest.

Thank you all! I found some old shims off a rear or a transfer case, who knows, but they look like they will work!  If not, I love the shim stock idea and will make that my next step if this does not work!
