What derailleurs does that have? I’ve been looking for some better ones and I can’t find anything as good as my old Suntour. All these Shimanos I see for sale seem flimsy.

This one has Sram derailleurs, though it is hard to top old SunTours. My Miyatas run VX and V-GT.

I was looking at a bike with an SRAM derailer and 10 or 11 cogs on it and the guy told me that no way will it work on my seven cog bike.

 

I think it had plenty of range, and adjustable limit stops. With a homemade friction shifter it should work with any number of sprockets.

The only issue I see is needing to 'cold set' (bending) the rear drop outs. IIRC. 7 speeds OLD is 128-130mm and 10-11 speed is 135mm. You can make it fit and any derailleur, except electronic, will work with a friction shifter. Hell, I even make Sturmey Archer 3 speeds work with friction shifters.

 

Grand day today. I took the 1970 Gitane Mexico track bike off the stand today for its maiden ride today. It didn't break and I didn't die so it was a good day.

It's Almost Done

It's unfair that the Gitane is 52 years old.

Paul and number of other folks.....some even GTK could not get message to through his access to e-mail.   For a family of like branded cars and goals....little thought is given to the contributor himself at times.  It was early CA time when I called though he is often wide awake at this time the phone message just said could not take the call at this time.

We have had some problems with Verison lately. I don't have probs with my ATT landline.

 

I quit calling Paul on the phone as he was 90% deaf and couldn't understand me on the phone.

 

Maybe I will try tomorrow, and with luck his wife will pick up the phone.

I tried a number of times to call and could never connect....would not even ring on his end and would get the recording that unable to complete the call, try again later.  Sure sign there may well be an outage.   I was able to make other cars today so ruled out possible problems on my end....but then...you never know.

I hope Paul is keeping well...Unlike a lot of my friends and relatives,I don't have"smartphone" and still  have a landline. I do own a flip phone for which I pay a small monthly fee to maintain the number, I don't normally give out the number because it is always turned "off" and only "on" if I'm on the road and wish to contact someone. ?

same here guy, I bet there is only 4 folks that actually have my flip phone number.  I use it as you, on the road emergency type device or just to touch base with the wife of my son.  Other than that, call the land line, leave a message, if urgent the wife will call my cell and let me know.

That is the message you would get if you tried to call my number today.

Seems my page plus phone has ran out of time. OK after this post I will do my usual $25 & it will be working for the next 90 days, or if I use the minutes up.

 

Just suggesting Paul's phone is no longer maintained, has a late bill notice & until caught up will not accept calls?

I am not trying to suggest anything more then that .... Yet at Paul's age & health, we certainly should have concerns.

It turns out I haven’t call Paul F since I bought this new phone. His number is not on it.

 

I’ll go dig out my old phone and boot it up.

I still had his cell phone number here on the private messages but I’m getting the message from Verizon that he is temporarily unavailable.

 

I might still have his wife’s number on my other phone. He called me once from her phone, I grabbed the number, and I ended up annoying her several times until I figured it out.

It is starting to get into the 100s here so I wouldn’t be surprised if Paul went out of town. I think the phone number I’ve been calling was his wife’s cell phone. That’s the only number I have left.

 

She doesn’t show up here in a day or two I’ll take a drive down to Reedley and bang on his barn.

So my Mongoose is starting to take shape. Here it is with a used Jesse James front end.

 

 I bought some new handlebars for it and a white wall tire for the rear. I got the skinny front white stripe tire from the back of the Manhattan bike and the silver hub front wheel from the same. 

 

I bought a used wheel and tire assembly to replace what I took off the Manhattan, and the wheel went to the front while the tire went to the rear. So that means I changed three tires and three wheels yesterday.

 

I had to take the extension tube out of the Park bicycle vice because it made the whole thing just too tall. Now it is the perfect height.

I bought a used Centurion Accordo frame and crankset, and I put the arms and elliptical Bio-pace chain rings on the mongoose bike. It got the silver pedals from the Manhattan which I had rebuilt.

Brake lever is the one that I modified from the Schwinn mountain bike and I was running it on the Manhattan.

 

The foglamps aren’t hooked up and they are just for looks. In fact they have never worked because the bulbs are broken. I picked these up for five dollars off the Napa discount table in Visalia California over 35 years ago.

The chrome work was never good enough for my motorcycle or my car but it’s good enough for a bicycle.

I don’t have a press brake so I used a piece of metal that was already formed & punched.

Here’s my regular rider. It’s a 1902 American cycle co. Wasp. It has hickory rims, glued on tubular tires, no brakes and I regularly take it camping and on trails.

A fellow who can build wooden rims can’t rotate a photograph? Study up a little bit. There’s an icon for that.

This is not the sissy bar I was building, but I ran out of gas too late to go to the welding shop.

 

This was the longest piece of uncut 1/2” tubing I had left, and so I whipped this up and upholstered it to hide the fact it I hammered the big loop out on the anvil.
