Almost Hacked

Tried to log onto the site this morning and I kept getting an error message.  Something wrong with my name or pass word.  So I hit the change your pass word button and was told to check my email for instructions.  When I got to my email account I found two messages from the site.  The first one told me that someone in Germany tried to hack my account and my account was locked.  Good job P15/D24.  Thanks for catching that.  The second email had instructions to change my pass word.  Changed it and I'm back on line.  I have a better pass word now.

 

I use a different pass word for every site I go to.  That way if someone is successful hacking into one account they will not be able to get to other information.

That is an excellent practice! Using a password manager makes it easier but anyway you do it having a different password for every site/account mitigates a lot of the risk for being hacked across the board.

 

I know someone who insisted, against my advise, on using a single password. When they were hacked it took them a lot of time and effort to regain control of their bank accounts, etc. You don’t want to have to go through that.

 

In addition to the two things you can’t avoid (death and taxes) you should also add that at least one of your online accounts will be hacked. The hack probably won’t be your fault (hackers get in through some fault in the server itself). But once a server for one of your accounts is hacked the account information on that server will be tried against other servers hosting other accounts. You want those attempts to fail. You do that by having, at the least, separate passwords for every site and account.

Yeah, your account got automatically locked after five attempts with the wrong password. I would also change your email password for your gmail account. The log shows someone attempted to get in probably using your gmail address. Past experience shows that means the email account has probably been compromised. 

 

Agree with Tod, use different passwords for all your accounts and a password manager to be able to deal with them.
