bluefoxamazone
hello!! while cruising my 53 cranbrook convertible, I hear noises from the rear end of the car, just like there is a birds nest with six fledglings under the car. I have checked but couldn't find anything loose... Someone an idea..? could this squeeking come from the leaf springs perhaps??
kencombs
Spring squeak is very likely. If it is, you should be able to duplicate it by just bouncing the rear bumper up and down, and maybe have a helper listen closeby the springs. Or get a heavy helper to bounce it while you listen. Some early cars had the rear springs wrapped metal with holes in the bottom to add grease. Are your springs wrapped?
Veemoney
If not the springs 2 other items to check are the u-joint and the lug nuts.
DonaldSmith
The springs on my 47 DeSoto squeaked, They did not have the magic Mopar spring wrap, of great notoriety. Attempts to grease them without taking things apart just didn't work. I found some PVC spring liners at one of the speed equipment houses, and installed the liners. No squeak. (In the photo, I'm getting ready to put in 2-inch lowering blocks. Cool.)
DJK
Also check your exhaust hangers.
bluefoxamazone
checked alle the above mentioned possible causes of the squeeking.. Greased all greasable points. Nothing helped. Yesterday made a trip and found the squeeking was most hearable at 40km/hr. Of course I am driving a convertible and you hear and smell everything... All suggestions welcome. grtz
JerseyHarold
The hub could be moving slightly relative to the axle causing your squeak. Check to see if the 'key' is missing from either rear axle (where the rear brake drum attaches). Also check the rear drum attaching nut for proper tightness. kencombs
can you hear the squeak with the car stationary and bouncing the rear bumper with your body weight? Simple test, but can tell us a lot.
plymjim
Were the rubber boots on your u-joints intact? I know you said you've checked all greaseable parts but they may require a closer look. Check the fluid level in your rear? Loose parts in your top mechanism? Lot of extra stuff to wiggle around in a rag top. Spring shackles?

Adam H P15 D30
Had a set of front wheel bearings squeak like birds right before they seized to the spindle. Thought is was a speedo cable till they let go. Edited October 27, 2021 by Adam H P15 D30
