Looks like a shift rite knob. An aftermarket device that enabled you to kick down the M6 trans into 3rd gear without flooring the accelerator.

Interesting - would it have attached to the end of the column shifter? I have a stock-looking knob on the end of that.

It is basically a ground interruptor which allows downshifts without going to full throttle kickdown by intervening in the power to the shift solenoid instead of flooring the gas pedal.  For those situations where adrenaline  pumping acceleration wasn't desired, like slowing using compression braking on a down grade.

Thanks Greg - it looks as though it should be mounted on the end of something though, rather than being a flush dash fit. How/where would it typically be mounted?

Replacing the stock shift knob.  Wire goes through the lever.  You would need the wiring diagram from the manufacturer to wire it in correctly.  Search this site for shift rite its been discussed before.  Also Google shift rite to see if there are other info out there.

nice find.....I am in need of something similar and looked to the knobs for line locks on rods and or OD control as used on some later vehicles...but none looks near as trick and clean package as you have pictured...my application will not be for shifting or such but simply a momentary switch for controlling a bi-stable relay.  Saw a fair looking knob at the swap meet but the guy would not quote a price....who are these people and why do you have it on the table if you have no price on it or know what you want...?
