I did not find any topics like this on any forums, so here goes.  Can anyone help me find out when NP 420's were used in the C1-C8-116 Dodge trucks?

I have started rebuilding the 54 Dodge I have had since 1955.  Most of the parts are hard to find but I am getting there but the transmission looks like it will stop me in my tracks.

I want to keep it as original as I can, so I would like to keep the NP420, which is the transmission that I think is in it now.

Any help on where I can get parts for it; bearings, seals, gaskets?  All the gears and shafts seem to be ok.

I have had the truck for 66 years and maintained it fairly well and overhauled the engine myself about 30 years ago.  Never touched the trans.  The trans shop I recently took it to has it in pieces and says they can't find parts for it.

I've been swappin' out 3 on the trees with the 420's for years. I also  had problems finding parts. I'm told the 420 and 435 are nearly identical if that's any help. I found a 420  in a scrapyard some time back and had the Pistole Bros in So. Austin go thru it and THEY had a hard time gettin' parts! I have had many of those NP 420 transmissions in trucks I've owned.

They are pretty much bullet proof.

Maybe some new gaskets and a rear output shaft seal.

Gaskets might be hard to find.

I would not do anything more to it unless you had noise or grinding when shifting.

I just rebuilt mine about 2 years ago, myself.  Lots of searching to get what I needed.

 

Vintage power wagons does have parts.

Ebay for various gears and bearings by mfr part number.

 

After bearings and a few gears, mine is much quieter and very smooth.

 

A factory parts manual would be a great help in your search.  A lot of items come up on ebay with the DCPD part numbers.

 

I skipped the gaskets and use 599 Grey / fujibond / hondabond.  No leaks whatsoever.  If you have a PTO on it, you will need gaskets to set gear lash, but those are standard gaskets.

 

I would suggest just getting the bearing sets from VPW, because they will get you correct parts the first time.  I had a few ebay ones that did not cross correctly and were wrong.  Give them a call and make sure they know the casting number and the application so they can help get what you need.  They have clutch sets as well.
