Heater controls

Recommended Posts

I had a pleasant surprise today show up at my shop door! This is the heater that will soon be in my truck since someone else liked the original heater that belonged in there. Now— question is what heater controls do I need and where do they belong in the truck?

I've never seen a factory setup for these trucks. I imagine there would be a 2 knob control panel that mounts to the underside of the dash. I've seen those in various mopars but never matching defrost or fan knobs to the truck knobs.

I have that same heater in my '42 Fargo. Three speed fan switch and cable to control the defrost deflector lever. Heat is controlled by turning on the tap on the engine head at the start of cold weather.

These are the controls used if you also have the fresh air option.....

Without the fresh air option the TEMP and AIR are omitted and blanked off.

Thanks for the pictures, those with the wood or bone knobs really look sharp. I don’t think I have the fresh air option, truck seems to have plenty between the window and vent that opens up. I guess just running the fan may even add something as well.

I'm not aware of a fresh air option in the 39-47s. I believe that came in with the pilot house trucks. The ivory knobs look like 46-48 plymouth car knobs.

My 1939 1/2 ton has only the valve on top of the water pump to flow coolant to the heater core and a fan switch mounted to bottom of the dashboard. The defroster is actuated by a lever on the plenum attached to the heater. No knobs there, you have to reach under the dash and pull a lever to divert the air to the windshield. I'm pretty sure heaters were an option in those days? Mine says only "Deluxe" on it. I think it's an aftermarket and not Mopar? It works well.
