M6 Fluid Drive Transmission Question

Tom Skinner

Recommended Posts

I have been offered a free Transmission. So I have a question:

Will a M6 Fluid Drive Transmission that is taken off of a 1948 Chrysler C-40 Crown Imperial (8 Cylinder) fit a C-38 M6 Fluid Drive Chrysler Royal (Six Cylinder)?

I have a Friend (Mechanic in his 70's) that said the C-38 and C-39 (Royal and New Yorker) would, but the Imperial C-40 might not.

There might be bolt up issues. This would just be a spare tranny for me so there is no immediate issue as far as using it goes.

Can anyone know or say for sure that it would or not or anything different?

Thank you.

Tom

The C40 Crown Imperial M5 transmission certainly should be the same as your six cylinder C38 M5 trans although the rear emergency brake drum U-joint yoke will be bigger than the smaller C38 six cylinder yoke as on your trans.

Just swap the rear brake drum and band assembly from yours if needed.

The trans bolt patterns are all the same...all six and eight.

The M6 trans is 1949 thru 1953 all Dodge, DeSoto and Chrysler cars.

Will not fit the 1946-48 cars.
