Tim Knaup Posted June 19, 2020 Report Posted June 19, 2020 (edited) I recently had my brake shoes from my 1947 Plymouth special deluxe relined and when I got them back I realized that two of the 8 shoes had a shorter lining surface than the other 6. Not sure if they were that way when I sent them off. Does it make a difference where I place them? Edited June 19, 2020 by Tim Knaup Quote
DCurrent Posted June 19, 2020 Report Posted June 19, 2020 Yes your shoes had shorter linings on them and if I remember correctly the shorter lined shoes go toward the front of brake while the longer linings are at the back of each brake drum. Not to confuse you but each drum has one short and long shoe. Someone else will chime in im sure. Quote
squirebill Posted June 19, 2020 Report Posted June 19, 2020 If I had read this question 20 minutes ago, which I did, my memory would have led me to agree with DCurrent's answer above. However you mentioned you had 6 shoes with long linings and only 2 shoes with shorter linings. I looked it up in my Plymouth Service Manual which runs from 1946 to 1954. In a picture of the front and rear brake assemblies it shows two long linings on the front brake and a long lining on forward shoe of the rear brake and the short lining on the rearward shoe of the rear brake. I don't know how long I have been assembling brakes incorrectly but now I stand corrected. Regards. Quote
Tim Knaup Posted June 20, 2020 Author Report Posted June 20, 2020 Thanks so much for the advice. How do I go about getting a service manual like the one you have? Quote
