Mechanical fuel pump

A motor knock began a short while back and slowly became more pronounced. Three mechanics listened to it but had no suggestions so this afternoon I started eliminating possibilities : removed the fan belt to remove fan ticking, , alternator, and water pump. Pulled the plugs to see whatever, regapped  and replaced them., so what else was mechanical. Fuel pump, mine is not in use, I have an electrical one. It did not have a true up / down action, so I cut the end off of a spare, put it on and “Bobs your uncle”, (PA saying), engine is quiet.

Whew!  Thought I might have a timing chain problem.
