Hi everyone i own a 1948 dodge truck that I've been working on for some time and would like to drive daily and want to convert to 12 volts, only because id like a little more cranking power just in case i have any mechanical issues on the road. my question is can i just bolt on a late model 12 generator say out of a '57 Plymouth or dodge with a 6 cylinder?  will that work has anyone ever tried that?

im not really into putting an ugly alternator on my engine or having to mess with those cheesy adjustable lower mount brackets any info would help thanks

That's exactly what I did to my 52 1/2 ton about 20 years and 30,000 miles ago.  The only trouble I've had was with the regulator that burned out about 15 years ago.

nice truck!, only trouble in having is figuring out what generator i'm looking for Ive yet to check the parts store and was hoping to find one online,i think I'm looking for one with 2 ears on it were the top bracket bolts up but i'm not certain have you got any pictures ? i think this would be the model to buy but not 100% sureNWMDC.jpg.7679d448f527485b58ee7f28442cd9ae.jpg

thanks Reg that really helps!,  i'm running one of the 25'' blocks also although i haven't been able to id it i was told the original owner swapped the engine for a desoto engine at some point, if i remember right the first letters stamped on the block are CAL witch i could find no info on.

I have been told by more experienced gents that you can simply swap to a 12v regulator and the 6v generator will be fine.  If/when it quits, the local auto electric place can simply rebuild it to 12v specs  while they have it.

It has been done before. Requires polarizing the generator when the new regulator is installed. While I would hesitate recommending this option, it works..
