Engine identification by casting numbers

Recommended Posts

I bought an engine from a 1938 dodge 1/2 ton truck and it’s turns out to be 25” long with a casting number of 666029 it must have been changed at some point and the seller ( to me) didn’t know it had been changed. Just FYI I bought it site- unseen

anyone know how to identify this block?

I was told years ago when I was considering restoring a 38 1/2 ton that they all had 25" engines.  The engine number should be stamped on the drivers side up front just below the head.  If it is a 38 Truck motor the number should start with a T42 or T43.

My understanding is the 201,218, 230 C.i. are all 23 1/4" long head. The 237, 251ci May have these ci off a little are the longer 25” heads

also the Chrysler and Desoto and possibly the larger dodge 1,2,5 ton trucks I believe had the longer head ( larger block) even in the 1930’s , but also the latter 1940’s chry and De So had the “ spitfire engine that is longer. My 38 plym tk can not fit the longer block

so I’m trying to identify this block to falicatate a possible trade for a 23 incher

casting number behind starter 666029

the sierial number isn’t trustworthy for proper identification as it looks modified

I have the exact same casting number on the engine in my Canadian 1/2 ton (1944 DD1S-16) It isn't the original engine for the truck, but it is from a 1940 Plymouth by serial number. Canadian built trucks were all 25" engines according to contacts and research I've made. Hope you manage to acquire an appropriate engine for your '38.

I'd like to get some assistance (and double checking) of the truck and engine information for my 1935 KH-32 V:

    body tag: B-3-0-LR15988

        B-3-0 = cab for a chassis cowl KH-32V (mid size truck with just the sheet metal from the dash forward, no windshield)

        15988 = sequential number in B-3-0 sequence

    build date: between June and October 1935

    engine numbers

        casting date: 8-12 = August 12, 1935????

        casting number (is this the correct term?): 882929-2 = ????

        engine number (left side of engine block, at front, below the cylinder head): T-13-7512

            T = truck engine

            T13: Make = Dodge Truck, Model = KH 16-18-V, KH 21-23-V, KH31-33-V

            Year = 1935

            512th engine built????

        lower casting (is this the correct term?): 107 = ????

    engineering code: T-13-E

        T = truck, 23" long, 201 ci

        E = 1-1/2 ton

    serial number: 8239904

I have a 1938 Dodge RC half ton. I have the build card. It has the original 25" 218 engine installed at the factory. I did some research and found the all '37 and '38 Dodge trucks used the 25" engine in half ton, three quarter ton, and one ton trucks. I believe these engines were made in Canada. In 1939 they went back to the 23" engine. The Plymouth trucks used different engines than the Dodges.

You can post your information here, Eric seems to be a walking bible when it comes to engine numbers, while not a pilot house he may be able to help.

Forgive me if this is common knowledge, but I have found that on 25" engines the ID is stamped on top of the tab at the front of the engine. Where as the 23" engines the ID is stamped on the side of  the tab at the front of the engine. I've also found this site helpful in identifying engines.

I have two old Mopars -- a 1939 Plymouth and a 1938 Dodge pickup. I have the build card for both vehicles. Both have their original engines that were installed at the factory. The Plymouth has the 23" head and the Dodge truck has the 25" head. (All '37 & '38 half tons have the long block.) Both engines have the ID stamped on left side of the engine near the top front (where a previous poster put the arrow in his pic). If it's stamped somewhere in addition I've never seen it.
