Alternate motor & bell housing mounts

Hi all,

We have been busy the last few weeks. A friend had a brain bleed. He went through 12 hours of brain surgery and weeks of re-hab. We have been helping out.

I can now get back to normal things.

I want to get a “better” set of motor mounts on the Desoto. I hate the front mount that sits under cross frame and is a pain to see its condition, much less replace.

I also put on a set of NO®S ones, which I think are too hard after 40 to 60 years.

So, take a look at the following link and chime in of the possibilities.

http://www.energysuspension.com/pages/univ1.html

I was thinking of replace the front mount with a hard mount and then cutting the mount bracket a couple of inches and putting two mounts on the frame under the bracket.

I was also looking at their tube universal mounts to replace the ones under the bell housing.

Thanks for your thoughts, James

It seems that the original sytle mounts were actually one of the selling points for our cars. "Floating Power" wasn't it?

Perhaps newer, softer motor mounts would suffice. Pretty cheap from Roberts or Vintage Power. You can spend more at Steele, but probably not necessary.

Tony,

All I have every seen are front mounts that looked like they were smashed real bad. Even new ones. I really wonder how long they are doing their job. I put in a very good looking new one a year ago and the amount of deflection in a year of use is something.

Thank is why I am wondering about other options.

The rear mounts, I did get from the usual suspects. I suspect that they are using very high durometer rubber in the rears, higher than orginal.

That is also why I was thinking of trying the aftermarket mounts as they give you a choice of 2 different durometers on their products.

James;

As long as you are re-inventing the wheel why not make your own motor mounts. McMaster Carr has everything you need.

Vibration Damping Pads

For information about vibration damping pads, see page 1320. For shims, see pages 3148-3149. Polyurethane Pads

Polyurethane is oil and chemical resistant, and has better deflection than neoprene. These pads have a wave-ribbed design that keeps equipment in place. Temperature range is 0° to 200° F. Color is black.

Standard pads can be cut to size with scissors or a knife. They can also be stacked by interlocking or crossing the ribs.

Plate-mounted pads are mounted to a 1/4" thick steel plate for use with machine bases or bench legs with irregular or sharp surfaces. The metal plate also evenly distributes weight. Note: Not designed for stacking.

Neoprene Pads

Neoprene provides high deflection for shock and vibration isolation. It resists water, oil, solvents, and abrasion. Color is black.

Individual pads have a recessed square-cell design that provides excellent stability and superior gripping action between machinery and the floor. They can be cut to size with scissors or a knife. They are stackable for increased deflection; shims are recommended after every third pad. Temperature range is -20° to +200° F.

Pad packs contain four 1/4" thick top pads and four 1/2" thick bottom pads that are ready to install. Top pads have a smooth surface; bottom pads have a cross pattern that secures machinery to the floor. Temperature range is -4° to +175° F.

Natural Rubber Pads

Natural rubber is softer and more resilient than neoprene. These pads have a waffle design made of 2" squares that provides a suction cup grip between machinery and the floor. Pads can be cut to size with scissors or a knife. They can also be stacked for increased deflection when separated by 0.06" metal shims. Temperature range is -10° to +180° F. Color is black.

Nitrile Pads

Nitrile offers greater resistance to oil, gasoline, and solvents than neoprene.

Individual pads have a square-cell design that provides excellent stability and superior gripping action between machinery and the floor. They can be cut to size with scissors or a knife. They can also be stacked for increased deflection when separated by 16 gauge steel shims. Temperature range is -10° to +180° F. Color is black.

Pad packs contain four 1/4" thick top pads and four 5/8" thick bottom pads that are ready to install. Pads have a diamond design on both sides for excellent stability and superior gripping action. Temperature range is 5° to 212° F. Color is green.
