218 Valve Spring colors

I've searched around here but haven't found anything other than pics.   My question what is the difference between the black springs and silver springs.  I believe all 12 springs are the same for the 218 flathead.   But I've found a set that has 11 black and 1 silver  sealed power brand.   The only thing I can think of ,is the different colors would help with knowing which valve you working on ?   Thanks.

Just for the heck of it I would check the spring pressures on em. If the silver one is a different supplier than the black ones, never know if the standards are the same. May not make much difference, if any.

they have to meet the standards to be a suppler...BUT.....of the colors listed....silver was not one of them.....springs were available in Green, Black, Brown and Gray....could this be  Gray and not silver...compression of 1 3/4 inch should be between 40-45 lbs..

EDIT.....ORIGINAL springs were available in above colors..any later production could be anything/anycolor

Thanks for the Iimfo,.   Yes it could be grey not silver.   That's just what the seller put in the item description.  So now I know. I appreciate it .

When I first built my 230 I put a new set of silver springs in it.  After the third time a spring broke I took them all out and replaced them with a set of uncoated ones.  It turned out that the silver ones were plated, which had an unfortunate side effect of making them more brittle.  The unplated ones have had several thousand miles of uneventful use.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well after resealing my intake / exhaust and carb.  Plus 're ran the valves for the 3 rd time.   Looks like I need to pull head.  May be weak springs.   So my intents are to replace springs.  Lap valves.
