I am 99% sure that I back in the '50's in high school, I remember that one of the senior guys had a P15 two door sedan with the radio antenna mounted just above the center of the windshield similar to the way some of the Fords did in the early '40's. Back then, P15's were literally everywhere and I never saw another one with its antenna located there. They were usually on either side of the cowl. Does anyone here recall ever seeing this setup on a P15? I was thinking that possibly this car was one of the first from the factory after the war or possibly an aftermarket application. Thanks for any info.

I've never seen one but my P15 has a hole in the windshield header where it would go.

Hey John - hope all is well with you!

Insawmone of these listed on eBay a year ago. It was in a 50's Mopar branded box and commanded a very high price. Not sure if it was real Mopar or not. Only ever seen them on 50's buicks.

I believe all radio equipped Buick automobiles of that era (convertibles included) had a center rooftop mounted antenna. My mom had a 48 Buick Super and it had such. Knob inside would allow the antenna to pivot and park facing the hood. My neighbor in Tennessee had a friend over and he wanted to see my car. He asked why was my antenna not mounted above the windshield. He commented that his mother had a P-15 and the antenna was mounted above the windshield. I have never seen a P-15 with such an antenna.

I haven't seen one either but it appears to be in the parts book. The manual shows a radio cowl antenna 50" Mopar Skyway as part # 1163608 and then radio cowl antenna 1163853. The cowl description seems a little odd but I guess that is the very top of the cowl above the windshield?

in 1939 dESOTO HAD TWO TYPES OF ANTENNA FOR THEIR EQUIPTED CARS WITH THE RADIO.  tHE WAY CALLED ROADWAY AND sKYEAY.  tHE SKY WAY WAS A DOUBLE POSTED ANTENNA THAT WAS ATTACHED ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE COWL AND WAS ON AN ANGLE NOT INSTALLED STRAIGHT UP AND DOWN AS MOST PEOPLE DID WHEN THE RADIO WAS INSTALLED AS AN AFTERMARKET ITEMS.

tHE ROADWAY ANTENNA ARE TWO RODS THAT ARE ATTAHED DIRECTLY UNDER BOTH SIDE OF THE RUNNINGBOARDS AND THEY LOOK LIKE LIGHTNING RODS. i F HAVE THESE ON MY 1939 DESOTO AND THE CAR WAS DELIVERED WITH THESE FACTORY ANTENNA.  i HAVE ALSO SEEN THE ANTENNA THAT IS MENTIONED IN THE PRIOR POSTS BUT ALSO BELEIVE THAT THESE ARE AFTERMARKET SO i CAN ONLY ACCOUNT FOR WHATS ON MY 39 DESOTO AND i ALSO HAVE FACTORY ACCESSORY SHEETS ON THE INSTALLATION OF THE RADIO AND ANTENNA FOR THE 1939 mOPARS.

I go by what's in the Part Book, and only cowl mounts are listed. I have never see a Skyway roof mount on a post war car, only prewar models.

parts book for the Dodge, I know it is an apple and not an orange but my all inclusive 39-48 parts books does not include accessories, the Dodge book however for the 1947 year shows windshield mounted Mopar Skyway part number 904 042  and the cowl mount, also a Mopar Skyway model as 1163 853

Yes that's what I posted. There are 2 part #s and I can't think of what else you would need a 50" one other than to reach the radio from above the windshield. The cord would have to go all the way to the L or R side down and then back to the center of the dash.

The way I read it is the 50" refers to the length of the mast, and both are cowl mounts. My '46-'48  Dodge parts book doesn't mention the roof mount in the accessories section.

I did think of that but 50" sure seems awfully long. Maybe not if its one of the ones that mounts to the side of the cowl with 2 mounts.

SOURCE:   D24 Parts book number D-11835 Copyright by Chrysler corp. 1947 Page 34, section 1-88-1  windshield mounted Skyway part number 904 042 is the package and consists of 20 individual part numbers within the kit for mounting this antenna.

Side note:  at bottom of same page indicates that the two package numbers Ed listed were not previously listed for Dodge passenger cars....

The date on my book is  Dec. 1948 and doesn't have 904 042 part number. Maybe they discontinued the roof mount later in the production run?

My antenna is mounted on the right fender and I have a spot light.  So I assume that they were both dealer installed.  I haven't changed there location in the last 49 years.  Oops not shown only holes.

That could very well explain why it is in my book and not in yours.  So many times on this site we have found this to be the case....I was greatly disappointed this morning when I broke out my Master Catalog on CD only to find that zero accessories were included.

There was a MoPar  Skyway antenna motor complete with instructions, part number # 904041, sold on ebay in March this year for $42. and change, (there is currently another on ebay for much more). An interesting accessory that would appeal to some. Never seen one before.

Never seen one! I don't see that part number in any of my parts books so I suspect it was a later year item (mid 50s?) that just happens to work with the earlier cowl antennas.

Looks like it works only with a specific mast, 904040.

Thanks everyone for all the input. This antenna as I recall was fixed like the early '40's Fords and not able to be flipped down like the Buick's were. As I said, back then P15's were everywhere and that car was the only one I ever saw with that setup.
