Main and connecting rod bearings

Recommended Posts

I am rebuilding a 48' B1B which is now in the album section. I have a knock and low oil pressure - less than 20 pounds - I am going to drop the pan and check the mains and the rod bearings. I am wondering if the bearings will have the size marked on them so I will know what size to order. I am assuming that if they are the original bearings, there will be no markings. If they are replacements the oversize will be marked on them -- right??

If your intent is to refresh the engine, eliminate the knock, and increase the oil pressure I would recommend you have a good automotive machinist measure the rod and main bearing journels with a micrometer before you buy any replacement bearings. Most likely he will find the bearing surface out of round and in need of turning. Once the crank is turned (cut undersized) you will need to purchase bearings to match the new sizes.

If you install new bearings on an out of round crankshaft the new bearings will fail directly and the money spent on the repair will be wasted.
