morson82
I'm rebuilding the front end of my 42 dodge. I am trying to put the king pins in but I cannot get the shims in above the bearing. I have tried everything but nothing seems to work. Can I omit the shims or will that cause me problems.
Merle Coggins
Shims are used as needed to take up any play. If everything is tight without them you are good to go.

Andydodge
Morson, gidday from downunder.....re the shims, Merle's right re the need for the shims, however I've found that there are usually 2 sizes of shims in the kingpin set, although they are probably the 1st thing to get mislaid......I've found that you can get the shim in by putting it on top of the bearing, hold the 2 against the spindle and with some grease/WD40 on the mating surfaces of the stub axle/spindle/bearing try and wiggle(that's a genuine Mopar term) the stub axle onto the assembly..........this presupposes that you have 3 hands and a good well rounded vocabulary for the discussion of the cars parentage...........seriously tho....I have put the shims in and sometimes had to leave them out.........assembly tolerances in the bearing may have an effect on this, maybe a very light rub of the bearing housing against some wet/dry paper to give you a couple of extra thou to allow the shim to fit might help..........regards, andyd
