2 ton of fun

It is a 2-1/2 ton Todd- my mistake again.! I think you asked me this same question a year or two ago. I made the same mistake then!

I'm going to slow down on this dear dodge forum help line. Lately I've been screwing up too much.

1951 and up J trucks.. Though not all are rated 2-1/2 ton. Depends on the tag specs on the door post. A JL is a 1-1/2 ton.

1948-50 J series are 2 ton max rating. My 1948 JA is a 2 ton. My 1951 JA is a 2-1/2 tonner.

Large 8" pattern 5 stud wheels 1-1/2 and 2 ton trucks most all using 14-1/8" front drums except J trucks.

Large 8-3/4" pattern 6 stud wheels 2-1/2 ton trucks all use 16" front drums.

Sorry for the piled on confusion....

Bob

no need to stop posting, bob.  you are a terrific source of information and knowledge about the larger trucks.  and, when you do make a mistake, you are really good about correcting it.  i am greatly appreciative of your contributions.

Thanks guys for the appreciation and confidence !!

I have owned or worked on or parted out just about every letter of B-Series dodge truck.

That actually has been a goal of mine which has been accomplished over the last 40 years..

I think now I'm starting... maybe just a little bit to forget a few of the differences between all the models--bummer.

So back to Pilot House Dodge truck training I go!

Ever think of authoring something? You'd probably be the best candidate to pick up where Don Bunn left off and produce a book highlighting the B-Series medium and heavy duty trucks. Bunn covered these a little bit in his books, but a commercial-specific edition would be pretty cool!

anyone with a dump bed have a photo of how their parking brake and pto levers are set up?

this truck didn't have the parking brake assembly. post-6005-0-33464500-1442769228_thumb.jpg

I was able to p/u one up (from a 54) hope it will work post-6005-0-20150100-1442769155_thumb.jpg

I am not opposed to looking for and adding, the two speed shifter (now black knob on the dash :) ) to the transmission shifter and using that knob for one of the pto levers.... just not sure on the replacement of the second lever..

Well as to the book....

I have been talking to McGraw-Hill.

Might be a deal when I retire.

As to the Miller Tools well they will be sold at a fair price to those who know what each one does and how to use it after a 24 hour training lesson and class room test quiz!

As to the guard dog and 4 ton... the dog inherits that. He's sitting in it right now.

Brent..

The trans you have shown looks to have the correct E-brake handle on it although I'm not up on the C series trucks.

There are a couple differences on the brake rod lengths ect. Only way to know is try to bolt it up to your truck. The parts book says most of the truck e-brake handle and parts are the same for 5 speeds but looks like a couple parts might be different. Too complicated to go in to detail here.

The hoist lever (levers) are different on all dump bed installs depending on the brand of hoist and installer.

Some pics of my property clean up dump truck...

trying to add the hand brake drum. I had to make a tool to remove the nut off the donor transmission post-6005-0-88965600-1447610470_thumb.jpgpost-6005-0-95907000-1447610473_thumb.jpg

the yoke off the 52 is smaller than the 55 post-6005-0-34370400-1447610887_thumb.jpg and the supports are different bolt patterns.post-6005-0-89091700-1447610890_thumb.jpg the drum and lining appear to be correct (although I don't have much to compare it to)

if you look at my original support (lower one) it is bent! (both ways, almost twisted!)

so the question of the day..... any ideas to straighten it out? it has that cast or pot metal texture to it :(

Looks like the previous owner was using the parking brake to stop the truck and caused it to bend/twist.

Can you use the later 2 ton drum and band with your trans bearing retainer and yoke?

maybe use some oxy acetylene torch heat carefully to straighten the bearing retainer.

Nice job making the yoke nut tool Brent!

Yes, the yoke from "Bob" fits the hand brake drum perfectly.

I was on the fence to try and heat it up, (wasn't quite sure if it would work) but I'll give it a shot. Heck the way it is right now is rather useless.....

I was thinking about clamping it or bolting it to some 1/2" plate steel or an "i" beam to keep the back flat.

Any suggestions on cooling it off after? Drench or air?

Probably should remove the oil seal and speedometer gear first

If you cannot use the other bearing retainer experiment with it 1st. I would let it cool slowly...

Yep... bolt it to a steel plate and rove the seal and speedo pinion too.

ok, this is what i started out with post-6005-0-96357200-1449373005_thumb.jpg i bolted it to an "i" beam, clamped it down and heated it post-6005-0-45165700-1449372809_thumb.jpg and got it a little closer post-6005-0-45395100-1449372812_thumb.jpg it isn't perfect but closer and i was able to hook it up post-6005-0-69430600-1449372799_thumb.jpg

Thanks dodgeb4ya and Akdn for the help!

on the front of the frame it looks to me, like there are additional position holes for the shock post-6005-0-78575400-1452921895_thumb.jpg  but I don't seem to find a reference for them (if that is what they are for)   Just curious....

Hello Dodgeb4ya,

That is a nice 'Big" Dodge you have there. I haven't been on this Forum for quite a while, but aren't you the fellow that had or has a Pilothouse or Functional design 4x4 truck that was said to be factory made?

Probably my truck your looking for.  55 changed to 4 wheel drive by coleman.  Power brakes and steering in 1955 4x4.  Will be a fun truck.  Still researching the history.

Follow me truck? Those are usually yellow or white for hi-vis on the runways....they would have used tugs if it was a larger airport.

recently received the build card,

and with the help of Kevin "Big Dodge" the early verdict Is, this was a US Navy truck. still deciphering the card but the key tag backs up that thought.

one question is, the "destination" says Crane Mic. (not sure if that was Michigan or Crane navel base in Indiana)

if any former military have photo's or suggestions on obtaining what this type of truck was used for. I would appreciate it.

tinkering a little on Rob recently. Something that I wanted to capture before it disappeared is the factory battery tray and tie down top. 9F81BDEF-1EEC-48FA-AB72-C8E664686525.jpeg.820262fcf599a65649c1d5a23abc834b.jpeg

I procured a tray (957778) that apparently is the same number as one for a 41-48 Chrysler & Desoto….

I ended up making the top cause I wanted something a little beefier

the truck takes a group 2 battery and I only had a group 1 for the test

but, I am happy with the test fit. I will replace the factory cables soon.
