On my P15 I am wanting to swap my canister type oil filter for one that I can change the element or maybe a remote spin on type. I know this subject has been discussed before but, could anyone suggest what would be in their opinion the best replacement? Some pics of the install would be great as well.

Thanks

If you look on ebay, there are many of these, "remote oil filter" units, not very expensive, oil filters available at

any auto parts stores, easy to install,, etc.

But,I still use my original canister, using C3 Frams available at the farm store, and Napa has filters also..

My understanding is that the "modern" spin on type oil filter is not really suitable to replace the original by-pass canister style filter unless modifications are done to the 23" blocks oil system.............I know I have seen pics of 23" engines with the spin on type filter but with no mention of the actual modification being done or needed............anyone got a definitive answer?........andyd

My take is to leave it as is. Reason being the spin on oil filters were made to filter 100% of the oil all the time. The normal setup is to pump the oil from the pump to the filter the to the rest of the engine and back to the pan. The by pass oil filter was made to filter about 30% of the oil as it bypassed through the system then be changed at 5000 miles or so, while the oil was changed at 2500-3000 miles.

Unless the car is driven on dirt roads a lot then change the oil more frequently.

If you change to a spin on filter with out the rest of the mod, you may as well just leave it as is.

As I read the question, it sounds like Pete may have the sealed type canister filter and is looking to replace it with either one that you can open up and replace the filter element or a later type spin on type. If that is so then the canister type with replaceable filter element should be a direct swap and should be available on e-bay.  I read it the same way, Jim. The canisters that take a replaceable filter can often be found on ebay. I have sold many of those kinds of filters on ebay myself, but am out of them right now.

What, exactly are these modifacations that need to be done before this can be used?  Looks like a good way around the messy cartridge type filters found on these cars.

Hi Jim/Robert.

Yes you are right, I have the sealed type. I think I would like the type that you sent the ebay link for Jim but, as well as the $95 asking price they are asking $171.57 !!!! to ship to the UK, then I will have to pay another 20% tax on the total figure which works out at $319.88 which is stupid money. Has any body else fitted a remote filter without doing other mods?

Thanks again

Pete...........have you checked locally in the UK for a canister filter like what was used by Vauxhall.........am pretty sure they had a by pass filter, certainly Ford Pilots and Chevs, so maybe Bedford trucks as they used Chave engines........I know that's not what you originally asked about...........also with shipping from the USA make sure they are not quoting you Fed Ex or UPS rates.............these are much dearer than USPS........United States Postal Service.............also get/work out  a rough weight and go to the USPS website and check the quotes yourself............I ended up getting a finned Beehive Filter from the US..........it is a by pass filter but polished up it looked a treat...........the rest of the engine bay looked shitty but that was to be next........lol...........andyd.

Hi Andy

I will check out the postage as you suggest. I think your filter looks great, where did you get it? were the threads the same as OE, and did you do any of the other mods that some other members have suggested, if not is it working ok?

Were I changing out an oil filter system from sealed canister, I would convert to use spin-on oil filters or modern drop-in canisters similar to that used on Pentastar engines.  It is only a matter of time before the old style drop-in filters become as difficult to find as the sealed cartridge have become.

Pete, when I got the 1941 Plymouth Coupe it was an older "restoration" that didn't have an oil filter(how CAN you restore something and NOT have an oil filter......lol)..........and as a hotrodder I decided to get the Beehive filter from the USA, think it came from New Jersey but they are available from places like Speedway Motors........as I had no filter I got the lines made up in braided stainless(had money back then) and connected it up........I also chased 2 spare filters to suit as I thought that was prudent........tho even allowing for better oil now and filters the spares should have outlasted me...........I ended up selling the car 2 yrs ago but still have the Dodge to go varoom in.......I never really gave the idea of using a spin on filter much thought as I liked the finned Beehive filters and it would have matched the intended engine.......finned head, intake and side plates...........can you notice a theme here?.............lol.........regards, andyd.

There very many oil filter assemblies available at a much lower cost.

You could look local also, as many farm vehicles, motor bikes, etc. still use remote/inline/canister type oil filter systems.

To honestly restore something would mean that if it didn't have one new it wouldn't have one after restoration.

I don't really understand why the spin on oil filter conversion as shown in post #8 would require more modifications to the engine? The way i see it is, all your doing is changing the filter type that the oil is flowed through. The connections into and out of the engine block are still the same so it should still only be bypassing that 30% of the oil to be filtered. So the only modifications would be mounting the spin-on filter housing and making up the lines. Can someone clarify this?

Thanks,

Ed.........yep I know what you mean re the restore but considering that they were an option and certainly would improve the life of the engine it seemed an odd thing to not have done......lol.............Chris............as far as any modifications you are right re what you said but I have also read somewhere(?) that whilst they will work they are not as efficient when used on a by pass system............but I could well be arse about here............lol.......and being a hotrodder.......well, fins just looked more better..........lol.............andyd

Pete,

My Plymouth's never had a filter fitted as far as I know and it 's still going strong after 66 years, for the mileage I do I came to the conclusion I'm better off spending my money on changing the oil twice a year than pay what's being asked for some of these original style filters.

Unless you drive on a gravel road daily.......but most people wouldn't. I drive my car maybe 20 x a season and change the oil about every 3 years.....I should have an hour meter instead of an odometer....lol.

Hi Guys

I have today purchased a universal remote spin on oil filter kit with different adapters for choice of filters here in the UK for £35, which seemed a good deal.

Thanks yet again for all the help.
