rockin rebel Posted January 6, 2015 Report Posted January 6, 2015 do not have a manual. just want to know, do I need to pull whole front sheet metal to pull motor and trans..thanks Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 6, 2015 Report Posted January 6, 2015 no...you do not even have to pull the hood...HOWEVER it would be easier with the hood off...much easier with the doghouse removed... Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 6, 2015 Report Posted January 6, 2015 Remove the transmission first, then the engine bell housing together. Quote
james curl Posted January 6, 2015 Report Posted January 6, 2015 With the dog house on you have to lift the engine high enough to clear the radiator support. This is high enough to be dangerous if you are using a two legged cherry picker. Be very careful when moving away from the car with the engine that high in the air as the casters on the cherry picker have to reverse direction and can cause the whole thing to roll over. I know this from experience pulling a Chevy V8 from a pick up I once had. The legs were still under the truck when it rolled over so it did a slow roll and stopped with the truck up in the air also. james curl Posted January 6, 2015 Report Posted January 6, 2015 You can remove the floorboard and remove the transmission working from the inside of the car after removing the driveshaft. Quote
Reg Evans Posted January 6, 2015 Report Posted January 6, 2015 I only removed the hood and radiator support to remove the engine in my 42 coupe. 2 Quote

rockin rebel Posted January 7, 2015 Author Report Posted January 7, 2015 next I want to pull inner fenders out to sandblast and paint.. drivers side does not want to come out.?? I must be holding my tounge wrong ??? thanks for all the help.. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 7, 2015 Report Posted January 7, 2015 (edited) along with the most obvious screws along the top of the fender curve...the inner fenders are locked onto the radiator shell and also by a angled shaped metal located at the lower inside that also is the front cowl mount to the frame Edited January 7, 2015 by Plymouthy Adams Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 7, 2015 Report Posted January 7, 2015 Will this engine be going back in? Quote
rockin rebel Posted January 7, 2015 Author Report Posted January 7, 2015 hey ALF, every bolt is out. it wiggles every way but loose..we have relocated the shocks, but it does not appear to be in the way.. Don, a 318 wide block, poly engine is going in. already have the rack in too, so no steering box in the way ....thanks again Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 7, 2015 Report Posted January 7, 2015 do you have the front fender pulled away from the radiator shell these cover the inner fenders, the inner fenders are captured here and not slotted for easy removal as one would think.. Quote
rockin rebel Posted January 7, 2015 Author Report Posted January 7, 2015 will check that.. I knew it had to have something holding it in, thanks Quote
rockin rebel Posted January 7, 2015 Author Report Posted January 7, 2015 got it out, but had to bend by the front of drivers door, area Quote
rockin rebel Posted January 8, 2015 Author Report Posted January 8, 2015 thanks again for the help.. I did get the drivers side inner fender off, but had to bend it a lot.??? how to put it back when painted.? I was thinking of drilling out the spot welds and making it attach like the pass side...thoughts.? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 it is relatively nothing to pull the outer fender considering all the trouble you had to do as it was to remove the inner fender and with damage to boot.....doing it right to me would be to remove the fender..it is not that much a problem Quote
MarcDeSoto Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 Reg, I love the look of your 42 Dodge!!! Is it a business coupe or club coupe? Quote
1941Rick Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 Myself, being you are putting in a different engine I would have pulled all the front off....Unless you are a magician you will have the new engine in and out a couple of time fitting everything......Good luck..... Quote
Smokeybear Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 I'd pull the front clip too. Two bolts at the radiator support, 5 on each side at the fender. Unbolt the wiring on the driver's side inner fender and it's off. Quote
Andydodge Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 Rockin...........I put a 318 Poly in my 1940 Dodge 41yrs ago........believe me you'll have a MUCH easier time doing this if you REMOVE all the front clip, ie, hood, fenders, inner fenders and radiator & support........not only will it make it easier to fit but easier to measure twice and cut once.......btw what yr Poly?.........heres a couple of pics of mine.............the last pic was from a couple of yrs ago........looks tidier now with the horn and chrome air cleaner gone, the twin 4 intake & a HEI fake Vertex magneto are going in next.........lol.........andyd. rockin rebel Posted January 8, 2015 Author Report Posted January 8, 2015 that was my first question. should I pull the nose off.. I thought aso also, thanks for the help.. Quote
rockin rebel Posted January 8, 2015 Author Report Posted January 8, 2015 funny, I asked if I needed to pull nose off and you said no, and you leave the hood on too..??? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 (edited) Please go back to your original post....per your original inquiry as to the whole front end, that was in reference to pulling the engine and you got the correct answer...this inner fender is another task that you added after the original question..The nose is considered to be the entire doghouse...to that end the answer was no ..In my above statement I said that the outer fender captures the inner fender at the radiator surround, bolts along the curved top of the outer fender and the lower bracket at the cowl mount and the very obvious bots at the top rear of fender at the cowl.....removing the outer is what it takes to allow this access...Pull away from the radiator surround....it was to be understood that the fender must be pulled away....I fitted my inner fender one side at a time many times in order to get the custom shape it now retains for the transplanted V engine..it is not a difficult task and is very easily done by ones self and but using the bolts to PIN the unit together while fitting. your original question is as below: do not have a manual. just want to know, do I need to pull whole front sheet metal to pull motor and trans..thanks Edited January 8, 2015 by Plymouthy Adams Quote
