MATT47025
So my dad and I have been working on old blue (1950 Dodge Truck) . He thinks the valves may be stuck. Any suggestions on getting them unstuck without taking the head off?
Don Coatney
Why does he think the valves are stuck? Did you do a compression test?
pflaming
Yes, on my suburban, four no compression, two at 100 +\_. Now treated with ATF and resting.
MATT47025
The compression test was the next step for us. When turning over he thought it wasn't drawing much air thru the carb. What is ATF?
Brent B3B
i have always heard Automatic Transmission Fluid referred to as ATF.
B1B Keven
ATF or diesel will work.
MATT47025
So old blue (1950 dodge truck) has 3 cylinders with 90 lbs and 3 with zero lbs. Any ideas on how to get the valves unstuck on these three cylinders?
Don Coatney
Starting a new thread on the same subject is not a good thing to do. Suggest you ask a moderator to combine the threads so all answers are in the same location.
timkingsbury
I have read your other thread as well, that you have 3 cylinders with zero compression. Its time to break out the tools and take off the head. Then you can turn it over and it will be pretty easy to disagnose what valves are or are not moving freely. MBF
If you truly have stuck valves, you can try pulling the side covers and hitting the valve guides with some penetrating oil and then see if you can gently tap them to get them to move. If this works, the key is to keep working the valve up and down with penetrating oil until it closes by itself w/o assistance. I lucked out on my last purchase and caught it in the nick of time. It was running on 4 cyls when I bought it. When it was delivered I choked it off on Marvel Mystery Oil (down the carb throat) and let it sit overnite. The next morning it started on all 6, and has been running fine since. Good luck. Mike

MATT47025
Well we are trying the Marvel Mystery Oil and time will tell. We are waiting on a carb kit from Roberts so we have some time. I guess if this doesnt work we will tear into it.
