jcmiller Posted December 28, 2014 Report Posted December 28, 2014 My 1942 coupe had burlap glued to the inside of the rear fenders and wheel wells in the trunk. I was speaking today with an upholsterer and he thought it unlikely that the trunk was trimmed solely with burlap. He thinks it must have been a liner and that another fabric had been glued on top of it. Does anyone know anything about this? I had assumed it was trimmed with burlap and was planning to glue down replacement burlap. Thx. Quote
desoto1939 Posted December 28, 2014 Report Posted December 28, 2014 WAS IT A THIN BURLAP MATERIAL OR A TICK BURLAP MATERIAL? MY 1939 DESOTO HAD A THICKER STYLE BURLAP MATERNIAL THAT WAS GLUED TO SIDE OF THE TRUNK COMPATMENT. I HAVE NEVER FOUND ANY OTHER MATERIAL LIKE THIS AGAIN, SO YOU MIGHT HAVE HAD THE ORIGINAL INTERIOR IN YOUR TRUCK. RICH HARTUNG DESOTO1939@AOL.COM Quote
jcmiller Posted December 29, 2014 Author Report Posted December 29, 2014 Remember that guy (Mark Walker) that made the nice videos about fixing up his '41 Plymouth? He sent me a photo of his restored trunk a while back. I looked through the photos I took of my trunk before I took out the burlap, and the same pattern is visible. Thus, the burlap was just a backing material and I need to ask Mark where he got that replacement fabric. Pics of his trunk and the burlap in mine are attached. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 30, 2014 Report Posted December 30, 2014 (edited) I have seen trunk material for sale somewhere.....but I now can't recall who offers it. As I recall, on the sides was a sort of pebble grained "rhino hide" kind of stuff........pretty tough but flexible to conform to the inner fenders. It went over some backing material kind of like burlap. It was a brownish....grayish sort of color I think. Not exactly a definitive answer I know. I just ran onto an eBay ad for someone reproducing Plymouth rubber trunk mats........here is a link......sounds like a good enough deal at $69 (plus $22 shipping). timkingsbury Posted December 31, 2014 Report Posted December 31, 2014 The photo JCMiller posted is what is under the trunk matt of my 1941 plymouth. I will attach a picture of my trunk. I also looked on ebay and see this one as a 1940-41 trunk matt. To me the 1941 and 1942 should be the same, but I see he as various years listed so you might be able to pick his brain. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/1940-1941-PLYMOUTH-SEDAN-TRUNK-MAT-1-PIECE-/330816118775?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1941%7CMake%3APlymouth&hash=item4d062d5ff7&vxp=mtr Quote
jcmiller Posted December 31, 2014 Author Report Posted December 31, 2014 I had two thick cardboard pieces under my mat, one in the middle and another in front of the axle hump. I plan to replace both with closed cell foam. My mat, which I think is original, is still in decent shape so I will keep using it. Quote
timkingsbury Posted January 2, 2015 Report Posted January 2, 2015 So what your saying.. is you found your trunk matt ! Quote
jcmiller Posted January 2, 2015 Author Report Posted January 2, 2015 My original post was about the fabric on the inside of the rear fenders and wheel wells - not the trunk mat. I posted the pictures of my mat and backing as an fyi because the thread veered in that direction. Regarding my original post, SMS thinks they have the correct fabric and are going to send me a sample. Quote

I thought when you said "....upholsterer and he thought it unlikely that the trunk was trimmed solely with burlap" that you meant the burlap material was it, aka there was not floor matt. Now I get you, your talking the under matt. But I will tell you your car was built in 1942. depending on where that car was built it is close to or is a 2nd world war built car and immediately the materials used changed. So I am not saying it is, but it if was made in windsor ontario canada, well Canada had been in WW2 since 1939 and by the time a 1942 car was built, something that looked like burlap as the under material was definately a possibility. I dont have pictures of one handy, but I can likely go get some. I know a couple of guys with cars built during the 2nd world war. So not everything was cheapened but things like Chrome and the under matt in a trunk definately were not up to what they were before and after WW2. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 3, 2015 Report Posted January 3, 2015 I gnu what he meant........but that stuff is kinda hard to describe. Let us know what SMS sends you. Quote
