Studebaker Truck Project

A friend and I bought this truck. It's a bit rougher than I thought but it has a Commander 6 245 engine and three speed with overdrive. I did a quick cleanup and we are going to sell it.I

I drove it today, brakes work, gears all work the steering is tight, so. . . But the leg room would kill me. That is one huge advantage of the Pilot-house, Leg room. After this I'm out of the used car business.

Some unique features: Dual wall bed sides, one piece formed metal firewall also serves as the dash thus all dash wires are accessable from the engine compartment, dash warning lights for gen and oil, seat frame very much like the Dodge, battery is under the hood [i don't like it there, blocks access to the engine, rocker panels have a series of 1" +/- drain holes, so difficult to rust out, Studebaker was linked to the hip with Packard at one time, until around ' 56 +/-, I did not know that, one piece windshield but different; both sides are flat and the center has a 'bend' , it is not fully curved, metal floor too thin, no running boards.

Don't like: SHORT CAB not leg room, door handle location is too far toward the opening edge, hard to reach, lots of revoutions on the steering wheel to do a U-turn, these 'dislikes are personal' as all are.

I like the Stude look. The cab height is a full 6+ inches shorter than the Dodge.

But you gotta love that spotlight!

drive with it facing forward..on or off in some states..automatic ticket...

I don't recall reading that one in the California motor vehicle code. Not saying its not there, just saying I don't recall it.

I am pretty sure you can't have a white light pointing other than ahead while the vehicle is in motion, but if the spotlight is off or pointed only forward when on then I think you will be okay here.

I'll be seeing a retired CHP officer tomorrow, I will try to remember to ask about this.

But it is very likely that the rules vary from state to state so check your local laws.

clearly I do not live in California..what happens is California I hope stays in California...note the additional wording...IN SOME STATES..South Carolina for one informed me that while living there....I have NOT read the statues either..but when it comes to advisements....I took note to regard them as viable..I believe it has to do with the ability to aim the light at will while driving..not necessarily one that is stationary like with the built in mirror..again...it is an accessory and is usually reserved for emergency or other state agencies/public utilities...second is south and night time spotting of game....poaching is a problem..these lights are an asset to the poacher..thus again if you do not have it pointed forward even if off you cannot quickly flash the light on for that kill shot..

truck is sold, light is gone. and had it not been on the truck when I bought it I would never have one of the unsightly things on my vehicle..

My friend picked up the Studebaker truck yesterday, so now my shop is 'ebola' clean. So soon I'll start a new thread on a new project. I bought this car for $350 for the tail gates. More in the new upcoming thread.

I think what you have there is a Scotsman. The one piece windshield and larger rear glass suggest it is 55 or later. Studebaker made these price leader trucks to clean out parts bins. So the later trucks got earlier grills hoods and lights, no trim and typically the small champion engine. So this one either got an upgrade when ordered, or a latter power train swap. What is the vehicle Id number?

Yes it is a fifty nine Scottsman. The engine has a special tag on it to verify that it is a 245 cu in engine. So it appears the truck may have been a special order with the larger engine and the overdrive. Lots of interesting mechanicals and body ideas on this truck.

I drove this truck, drove nice and straight even tires that are marginal, steering was tight, rode very nice, but it doesn't have enough leg room for me. It's my favorite looking truck, but I LOVE my dodge.

I remember my 4x4 days in the Bay Area (california).....

The CHP would check that I had a fuse to the spot lights and have them pulled during street use.
