wdoland Posted June 10, 2014 Report Posted June 10, 2014 What is that small little box next to the fin of the carburetor that has wires connected. I have fluid-drive. Need to find one and I don't know what it's called. Quote
desoto1939 Posted June 10, 2014 Report Posted June 10, 2014 A picture of what you are asking about would be very helpful. Do you have overdrive in your car? If you do this might be part of the kickdown wiring to get the overdrive to engage and disengage. Since you also have fluid drive there could be selinoids that are involved to make this work. I have a 39 Desoto so i do not have FD but just adding some comments. Post some pictures so we can help you. Quote
DonaldSmith Posted June 10, 2014 Report Posted June 10, 2014 For the semi-automatic transmission (tip-toe or Klunko-Matic), the carburetor has a contact that is grounded when the pedal is pushed to the floor. At certain speeds (below 45 mph) this makes the transmission downshift. There is a little button that the accelerator linkage depresses at full throttle. Quote
wdoland Posted June 10, 2014 Author Report Posted June 10, 2014 (edited) It's the rusty thing in the lower right. No overdrive. Edited June 10, 2014 by wdoland Quote
wdoland Posted June 10, 2014 Author Report Posted June 10, 2014 The first photo is what's on my car now but it's the wrong carburetor. It works fine but I wanted to get the correct one, rebuild it just to have it and learn about rebuilding in the process. The second photo is the carb. I just bought on ebay that's missing the "dashpot" How does this work? On the carburetor I just bought there's no hole or mechanism going into the carb, just a screw down point. I can't find anything on the net that describes how this thing works or if I can buy a replacement. Quote
DonaldSmith Posted June 11, 2014 Report Posted June 11, 2014 I just deleted a long explanation of the gizmo with the wire attached. It's the "anti-stall magnetic lockout". I forgot the rest of what I was going to say. But this is a lead. The gizmo has something to do with the shifting of the semi-automatic transmission. If it's a Chrysler with "Fluid Drive, it will have a fluid coupling and a semi-automatic transmission. If there's nothing where "first" gear would be, it's the semi-automatic. Drive around with the selector where "Third"would be. I had better post this before I delete it. Quote
wdoland Posted June 11, 2014 Author Report Posted June 11, 2014 (edited) Ok, so the dash pot is in the carb and the "anti-stall magnetic lockout" is on the outside. I guess it's magnetized to make the dash pot work? Were can I get another anti-stall lockout? Don't feel bad about long explanations, I need things spelled out for me....please, feel free to explain away! I guess if I don't find another lockout, I could use the one that's on the car now, right? Edited June 11, 2014 by wdoland Quote
Tusler 49 New Yorker Posted June 12, 2014 Report Posted June 12, 2014 It is an electro magnet when it is energized. probably have to take it and have it rewound by a generator or starter repair shop. or start calling around to salvage yards in Hemmings. Quote
