42dodgeguy Posted April 28, 2014 Report Posted April 28, 2014 guys: I've got a 42 Dodge convertible, and have the glass mailbox style rear windows. I've come to the realization that outside mirrors are a must, especially on the passenger side. I've learned from past experience that any mirrors mounted on the doors will move out of adjustment every time the dors are opened and closed, so want something that will fit where the cowl trim is. I've looked around and am finding not much. I've tried to make some bracketry, and nothing is satisfactory so far. I'm of the opinion that any mirrors have to be visible through the windshield, especially on the passenger side. I know there's some gooseneck deals out there, but most are for Chryslers with the 1 1/4" wide base, and I need 1" base for my Dodge. I've seen some pictures of cars like mine with mirrors on, but I'm guessing that the one on the passenger side is probably just for looks and is not really functional? I'd really appreciate it if any of you convertible guys could weigh in on this and provide me with any threads of wisdom on this dilemma. Thanks a million in advance to any and all who would respond. desoto1939 Posted April 28, 2014 Report Posted April 28, 2014 If you are referencing the mirrors that attached where the small trim is on the cowel section for the passenger and driver side of the car there has been several discussions on this sytle mirror. BAsically most people have said that they look great on the car BUT that they are an estic look for car and you can not really see anything with this style mirror. I have clip on style for my 39 Desoto which is not a convert and the passenger side mirror does help some but you have to adjust your postion in the front seat to get a good picture onthe right side. Robin (UK) Posted April 28, 2014 Report Posted April 28, 2014 (edited) 42 Dodge... Nice!I'm in the UK, so I have to rely on my mirrors when the top's up on my P15 convertible, because we drive on the 'wrong' side of the road.I fitted a pair of swan-necks to the tops of the doors. Both are visible from the driver's seat and they fit well with the style of the car.I have stuck a 4" round convex mirror onto the passenger side, to give a wide angle view. it's great for helping with vision when pulling out to overtake. here's a link... http://www.est1946.com/so-calswanneckoutsidemirror.aspx Edited September 23, 2014 by Robin (UK) Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 28, 2014 Report Posted April 28, 2014 the bove swan neck mirror do a great job on these older cars..the stem has to be a bit long to place the mirrors in view of the driver....these mirrors can often be found on E-bay for special price <50.00 the pair and I have advertised that link here in the past and those who purchased well well pleased with them..just ensure that the base has a larger bolt for attaching to the body and a smaller post for anti-rotation there are other style mirrors out there that work as well as these and are more correct but a bit more expensive and of course the break your bank originals from the factory...I will go so far to say that those folks selling the chebbie repop and saying they fit...well, they must be only referring to the fact they can be bolted on..less than operational when affixed as the ones often claimed to fit with the mid 60's Falcon being the source..I do not recommend either of these... jmilgram Posted September 23, 2014 Report Posted September 23, 2014 I find that the only true safe way to drive a P15 ragtop is with the top down; the driver cowl mirror is small and hard to see but possible to use if finely aligned and you move left in your seat to see the rear traffic; the passenger side is totally hidden by the door and vent glass frame; When the top is up you have to use the rear window often to know exactly where the other cars are and driving in the right lane is safer than the left unless you stay put; The blind quarter is hard in city traffic and care must be taken to switch lanes, but between the rear window, sound and a good co-pilot, driving with the top up is still viable. Plymouthy Adams Posted September 23, 2014 Report Posted September 23, 2014 right side mirrors were mainly just cosmetic balance on these cars up into the early 60's Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 23, 2014 Report Posted September 23, 2014 I only have a mirror on the driver's door........have no idea what it was for originally.......purchased at a swap meet based on the fact it sticks out from the car farther than one I previously had, allowing better rearward vision. It has a set screw to secure the head (mirror) from moving from vibration of closing the door. I have the large plastic rear window, which is non-original, but offers better vision. I think the style Robin has is probably the best. Quote
