navyboy Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 Anyone know if a 53 ply wiper motor would work in a 52 ply? Kind of hard to tell through pictures if it would work. I know the body styles changed but figured someone may know if the wiper motor would carry back a year. Thanks. Quote
_shel_ny Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 (edited) Part #'s are different in the book. You may be able to make it work. May need linkage/mounting modifications. Edit: 2 different motors were used. Autolite, and Redmond Additionally there were 1 speed, and 2 speed. Good part is, book shows 53-54 Plym/Dogde the same for some if sourcing used. soth122003 Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 Depends on which wiper motor you have. There is the Auto-Lite elctric, the Stewrart-Warner elcetric and the Trico vacuum type. It sounds like you have the Stewart-Warner. It has two speeds. You might want to check the linkage and try a little oil there. Remember, a bullet may have your name on it, but a grenade is addressed "To whom it may concern". Quote

If electric: in addition to the soth suggestion You could replace the 67 year old grease in the motor. It could be a bit crusty. You could remove the screw in each pivot tower and oil them. You could check the commutator and brushes for condition. Not sure how fast they go for others, but mine would have been described as slow and slower. They are not like modern wipers. Quote

Really no option other than a replacement or possibly a place that could restore it. The broken one I pulled is electric but I haven't checked the model. Sux was hoping a 53 would work but also noticed different part numbers all though they appear the same. Any other thoughts. I cant pay stupid money fir one im in the military lol. Quote

How many switch positions? Edit: I suppose a 1 speed could be installed instead of a 2 speed. It works fine with the wiper arms of but when I put them on, the motor won't drive them. I'm going to try greasing the paddle, but if that don't work I'm going to send it out for repair. Some measurements of the mounting points, and views of the linkage connections may confirm one way or the other. Mounting brackets may be swap-able. Or possible to make 1 from 2. If you are looking on ebay, you might make an offer. If an item has been listed multiple times, sometimes a seller will come down a bit. Edited March 10, 2014 by shel_ny Quote

Even though there's not been a great need for using my wipers lately, I took the radio out to lube the arms' pivot points. My Autolite electric wiper motor looks from the casing to be in good shape. It's a one speed and running on 6 volts. In the searches I've done and the comments here, it sounds that these wipers are slow. I've nothing really to compare it to so here's a short video I took before washing the car. So is this wiper action typical or is there more to do? Thanks http:// Quote
