austinsailor Posted January 30, 2014 Report Posted January 30, 2014 There is a '53 Plymouth engine and transmission on Ebay, a hi drive model. In the picture I notice that there seems to be a couple fittings coming off the oil pump. I knew that engine oil is used in the transmission. Does it have it's own lines from the oil pump to the transmission? I had the idea it went through the motor block and required the correct block. I don't have one, but I'm curious how it works. martybose Posted January 30, 2014 Report Posted January 30, 2014 I'm familiar with that pump, because I modified one when I made my external oiling system. For reasons that I'm not familiar with, the Hydrive cars move the oil pressure valve from the block to the revised oil pump cover. There are no connections externally, it's just the same spring-loaded plunger system that most of us have in the block on the other side of the engine. Marty Quote
austinsailor Posted January 30, 2014 Author Report Posted January 30, 2014 (edited) Interesting. I assumed those were fittings for missing oil lines.I wonder if it has increased capacity for the transmission?Gene Edited January 31, 2014 by austinsailor Quote
Niel Hoback Posted January 30, 2014 Report Posted January 30, 2014 It may have had a remote oil filter on it at one time. Quote
54Illinois Posted February 1, 2014 Report Posted February 1, 2014 Hy Drive motor I pulled apart had the oil ports thru the block oil channel, to the transmission. Also, a nice 9 quart oil change to go with it! There is a 1/2 inch nipple that directs the oil returning from the transmission pouring into the pan. That funny looking thing on the oil draft pipe I think is to keep oil from spewing out? Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 1, 2014 Report Posted February 1, 2014 On mine, that thing on the draft tube is a metal mesh filter. Its probably there to keep dust out of the crankcase and condense oil vapors into drips, but I think mine works best as a mouse deflector. Quote
