Dodgeb4ya Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 Yesterday was a nice sunny day. A good day to start up one of the big Dodge 2-3/4 ton parts trucks that has not been run for two years. Clean the points, pull the carb tops to get the accelerator pumps/jets working. Install the 12 volt battery. Crank it over-boom fires right off but on 5 cylinders. Ran it at slow RPM for 10 minutes-still on five. Better pull the plug on dead #3. Plugs are pretty rusty on the outside. I replaced them when I bought the truck in 1985. They only have 15 miles on them but at least several hours run time just to keep the truck movable. Well I tried to remove the plug gently as I knew rust was an issue and I have broken them off in parts vehicles before! Well the darn plug Hex top instanly broke off. I cannot spell the swear words I was saying. I was flabbergasted that I broke it to say the least as I now had to load up my "blue tip" wrench set and get it down to the truck. Those welding bottles are heavy and should stay in the shop where they belong not heating spark plug casings busted off in a 306 Dodge! An extra hour and a half all was fixed- including the sticky intake valve but what a Dodge truck revival day! Please change your spark plugs in your outside parts cars in wet country every 5 years otherwise you will be dealing with this issue.....! It was kinda fun though!!! Bob 1 Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 ran when parked... this is important though to keep tabs on the physical condition of the plugs...the wells do hold water often for for a period of time should you have a leak along the hood center seam.. good post Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted February 26, 2013 Author Report Posted February 26, 2013 "Ran when parked" Yes a statement I have heard so many times from people selling cars and trucks I have looked at or bought over the years. Sooner or later I will be saying that too when I sell the vehicles off. Difference is I will- hopefully be able to say-It will start right up even after sitting out for years. I saved these big trucks because they were to be scrapped. I wonder at times if this was a smart move Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 I think the car I went to look at today was about the icing on the cake by seller.....I thought I had about seen it all and heard it all over the years but this was the first time I had heard it all in the same sales pitch... MBF Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 I usually use a never sieze on the plugs on the flatties. I've had good luck (so far knock on wood) in filling the wells w PB blaster to get old plugs out. I still have to do this on the 50 2.5 ton that I'm working on. Good success story on getting that bugger out! Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 Heat can be your best friend at times. I used heat and the candle wax trick to remove the rusted plugs from this head. I also ran a tap through the holes to clean the threads. . Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 Don..you given the install of that head any more thought of late or waiting till head gasket time to do the deed..I agree with your thinking..don't fix anything that works... Quote

I have given the head upgrade a lot of thought. But to date no action. I am planning a trip to Buffalo last week in May. I may install the head prior to that trip. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 (edited) it was the "who's who" on used car sales Don..if you ever heard a tag line to promote a sale in your life..add them all togehter and play them back..it was this all over....the car had a puff bomb of paint applied..it's only sving grace...oh the engine did sound decent..but the car was not safe to drive at any speed...really a shame as the body was solid...
