Powerhouse Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 I just installed the pertronix ignitor and coil..and new ignition wires. firing order I have is 153624, with rotor pointing towards front of engine on cylinder 1. For some reason I cannot get the thing to fire with the clamp attached as shown in every book and photo...with the vacuum can points towards th front of the engine and up a bit. I can get it to run extremely retarded but cannot advance it enough to get it to run because the shaft lubricating thing hits the block and the clamp also hits the block. I turned it so the can points toward the ground and it runs...but I cannot have the clamp attached while doing this. WHAT GIVES?! Anyone else with a 47 have pertronix? Can you help me with how this thing is supposed to be mounted. Quote
P15-D24 Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 I haven't done a Pertronix but I have done a couple crane opticals. Same idea. You need to reference the tower position of plug number one on the outside of the distributor so you can alight the Pertronix firing point to be the same as stock. I just put some tape on the outside and mark it with the cap on. When the distributor is mounted correctly #1 should be around 6:30 or 7:00 on the side of the engine. Quote
greg g Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 Don't forget to look at the other clamping screw on the bottom of the distributer body that holds the clamp to the dist body, you may be able to get a bit ore adjustment there but you should static time the engine then align the rotor with number on in a position wht will allow you some adjustment. Powerhouse Posted January 19, 2013 Author Report Posted January 19, 2013 Nevermind folks....that's what I get for doing to much in one day. I was off by one spark plug wire on the cap. I moved them all up one and it was fine. I'll set it tomorrow and test drive. Thanks! Quote
Go Fleiter Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 Nice to hear, I use a Pertronix in my 51 since a couple of years: never had to adjust it! Greetings from Düsseldorf! Go Quote
greg g Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 That seems to be a pretty common situation that may of us hace dealt with. Glad to hear you got it ciphered out. Quote
Mark D Posted January 20, 2013 Report Posted January 20, 2013 Hey Powerhouse - Curious to know where you purchased the ignitor and coil and what you paid for it. Quote
greg g Posted January 21, 2013 Report Posted January 21, 2013 You can find the pertronix unit lised in thier agricultural/ industrial catalog. Look for Massey Ferguson Combine with Chrysler L 6 engine, just make sure you use the footnote for Positive ground. The ignitor 1 coil should be listed right there also. Quote
P15-D24 Posted January 21, 2013 Report Posted January 21, 2013 Or check the Enhancement article for Distributors under the Tech menu. The article has been updated. Quote
Powerhouse Posted January 21, 2013 Author Report Posted January 21, 2013 I got mine off ebay for $130 including the coil. Best deal I could find. Works brilliantly too...just make sure you have the suppression style cables and not solid core, they can cause to much electronic noise and damage the ignitor. I got a set of suppression cvables from napa @ $20...cut to length kit. Pertronix I got from these guys: http://www.ebay.com/itm/150928396594?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 Quote
