The service manual calls for .003 - .008 rear axle end play for the 49 half ton.

I have been working on the end play adjustment for several hours now and the best I can get with the shims I have (between the axle housing and backing plate) is .010. Is this too much end play? If so, does any one know of a source for various thickness shims? Your help is appreciated.

Are your axle bearings in good condition? Are you at .010" with no shims either side? Did you make sure you cleaned the backing plate, shims and axle housing ends of all grease and dirt- really shiney and clean? That alone (Dirt and Grime) will cause excessive clearance. Shims are usually .005/.012". So depending on what thickness shims you already have you might have to replace a .012" with a .005" , or two .005's to tighten free play up. Mix and match the shims, but do you have extra shims to play with? You are close at the high end for used bearings-new I'd try to be closer to the lower range .003-.005". I always try to stay with in spec on axle free play. Later Mopars-late 50's through early 60's are set with more clearance around .014". Not quite sure why on those.

I would make sure the bearings and races are in good shape, specifically the race. As stated clean it up really well, make sure all parts seat correctly and install the shims. Remember your dealing with 60 year old parts and equipment.

Bearings and races are in excellent condition and all surfaces are clean. With out shims the bearings are too tight and when I use the shims that I have the closest I can get to the recommended specs is .010. I need to locate a source for thiner shims so that I can close the gap and get within spec. Thanks for your responses.
