Hello all,

I was wondering if there is an easy way to go about having a key made for a 48 plymouth trunk handle lock. I have no key! Is there a code that can be found on the cylinder?

No code that I have ever found. A lock smith may be able to get one made. I have two NOS locks with keys I can part with one pretty cheap. Let me know. You can pull the lock by pressing in the retaining pin with a needle. Look for a small hole just on the edge of the handle by the top of the lock. Post a pick of what it looks like next to a ruler when you get it out. If it fits I will let you know that is if your interested.

That was some quick answers. I haven't got the car yet but noticed that the only key with the car does not fit the trunk. Also further reading the owners manual the trunk has its own key. I didn't know new key cylinders were available. Although one of the nos ones would be nice!

I'm having trouble locating part suppliers linked to this forum! Where are they at? Are there any suppliers that are prefered amoung the forum?

Thanks fellas!

unfortunately you will need the key to turn the lock at least 1/4 turn in order to move the cylinder to where the lock tang you depress is off high cam..IF you pick the lock, relatively easy, you can remove the cylinder and any locksmith can rekey to a key you do have or cut a key to the tumblers already in place..acutally if you have a key odds are you can key the tublmes to match the key you have yourself..have don this many times over

The glove compartment lock is easy to remove, my 49 was held by 2 small screws. You can take the lock to a locksmith if you can find one who knows his job. The glove compartment takes the same key as the trunk. Just as the door key and the ignition key are one and the same.

that is a good idea and could well work IF you can verify that the trunk latch or glove box has never been changed over the life of the car...but if you need a key..it will get one of the two missing keys fixed at minimum and you could luck out with both for one money..worse case..you can't lock your trunk so make sure your luggage will fit in the glove box..lol

Those trunk locks are kind of a pain. I took one to a locksmith who said

he could make a key. He finally produced a key that barely worked, and

broke the collar on the back side of the handle shaft. Of course, he wanted

paid so that mess cost me something like $17. And the handle is still

broken. Lock smiths in our town aren't what they used to be.

You can buy a brand new ignition tumbler with key at O'Reilly Auto

stores. They have the "Pentastar" later model style of key, but that

isn't a problem to me......I just use it even if not the original style.

Pretty much, nobody sees the key but me.

Since when is the glove box the same key as the trunk?? My car is ignition and doors, trunk, and glove box. The glove box lock takes a smaller blank and I believe the only thing that can be keyed the same is a locking gas cap(my glove box blank says gas on it)

You guys have locks on your glove compartment????

My 39 Desoto had two options for the glovebox:

1. Plastic push button lock

2. Lockable push button

Also this is where the clock is installed in my 39. It is in the lid of the glovebox and bolts onto the lid.

Some P15s had locking glove boxes, while others did not.

I don't know what generated the difference......perhaps if a

Dlx or Spc Dlx.
