Where is dat VIn # ?

Got a 48' Dodge dump truck, about a 3+ yard single rear axle, the vin on the title is different than the Serial code...uh oh'. Is the vin hiding in some strange place or is the serial code supposed to be the vin? numbers not even close....

At least for cars, lots of states used the engine number for registration purposes. Maybe that is true of trucks as well.

Yup, very well could be the engine number on your title. However, if the engine was replaced some time along the way it'll now be different. Good luck. They didn't use VIN's, as we now know them, back then, just serial numbers.

That serial number ---oops! showing my age, I mean VIN number--- was usually stamped on the frame too. In the 1930's cars it was located on the left frame rail close to where the gas fill tube went into the tank. Back then it was the engine number that served to be the actual vehicle ID number. So many things were not changed after the war until the '50's so your truck may have that number stamped on the frame somewhere too.

Pilot-House trucks have the serial # stamped into the left frame rail near the front axle, slightly behind the front spring mount.
