I believe that I just recieved an email from a hacked aaccount. The mail came from a couple we met in Marylad at the POC meet 2 years ago.

Unfortunatly the husband recently passed away, and it seem that some one is taking advantage of that situation.

I know several members of this forum have corresponded with them via Email and may also be targets of this situation via their address book.

The message is one of those boiler plate "I am on vacation overseas, and have been robbed of cash credit cards etc. Police no help, Hotel manager being an @$$, etc." Hopefully our friend's grieving wife is at home, and not holidaying in London, and that is just what it seems, a fishing expidition by unscrupulous folks taking advantage of the situation.

I will kindly put this way..no other person or government entity pays my phone bill or internet access..therefore I have no obligation to answer much less speak should they call..if a business feels I must speak to them on the phone, then kindly furnish me with the same..

This a virus that has made its way on to their account. The virus sends the e-mail to every one in the address book. It doesn't really care if the account is active or even what personal circumstances the account owner may be experiencing.

My thought is that anyone who would pull a scam like that should be strapped in for the ride along with "Garbagestate 44's" idea, posted 4-11-2011:

"I can think of 3 occasions since I got the 47 back in 07 that I felt like stuffing it with thatch and kerosene and throwing in a lit highway flair just before rolling it off a cliff"

I got the same email a few weeks ago except it was "from" the president of the POC. Now, I don't know him, never sent him an email or received one from him. I am a member of the POC, so I figure that the club email got hacked.

No. It was just Nick's (the POC president) personal email that was hacked.

The "on vacation in London" email hack and social engineering scam has been around a few years. The first I saw it was a couple years ago when we got one of those emails from a colleague of my wife. I double checked the email headers and verified the mail was actually from the person's account. My wife tried calling the number given and became suspicious, so we called the colleague's cell phone and found out the real story.
