Olddaddy Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 A few weeks ago I was tempted to purchase a 1957 Dodge school bus. I thought about impending old age retirement and happy wandering back over the paths of my youth. Then reality set in and I decided to pass on the opportunity. The owner, a friend of mine, called to say the County has sited him for having non-op vehicles on his property and the bus is mine, for a lesser price so long as I move it immediately. So, it is headed to my place and a questionable future. It's not quite a Pilothouse, but it's a Dodge and homely to boot. Now what?!? Quote
Tom Skinner Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 Road Trip! Go enjoy that bus. Bring along some friends! Tom Quote

Young Ed Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 If there was ever a vehicle screaming for a couple gallons of rustoleum yellow and a roller thats it. I love it! What drivetrain? The 54-56 bus in the local junkyard has a flathead in it! Quote
PatS.... Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 That would be a great weekend camper just to get away from it all. A nice 440/727 and a cot and an icebox. OR, make it operable and have a good looking mobile storage shed Quote
Olddaddy Posted February 15, 2011 Author Report Posted February 15, 2011 It has what I believe is an early 383 under the hood, didn't look too closely. When I was under the spell I was thinking Cummins Diesel. I will most likely use it for storage even if I have to tag it to do so. Long term I don't know what will happen. It is a cool thing just to have survived and still be driveable. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 now all you need is graft on a set of wagon fins and lights and you can make a very pregnant Sweptside...good looking bus...find a Sprinter roll over and do the deed Quote
ggdad1951 Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 THAT would make an AWESOME tailgating machine! Quote
Young Ed Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 Dont think 383s were out yet in 57. Of course someone could have been playing. Its too bad it doesn't have a hemi. I think its just old enough that it could have. Otherwise I think it could have had one of the poly motors. Quote

Olddaddy Posted February 15, 2011 Author Report Posted February 15, 2011 The engine is not original, looks like a shade tree job. I have a friend with two original hemis, but thinking like that leads to time and money being spent. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 (edited) Reg..that camper is spiffy enough at the rear but never cared much for the front styling..now the big honker of a nose like the bus has..in your face.. first 383 was 1959..couple versions of it out there in the early formative years...got a nice set of early top cap factory 383 mounts in the 41 Dodge..but the 383 is form the 1968 vintage..
