Rodney Bullock Posted November 11, 2010 Report Posted November 11, 2010 It's been awhile since I have been so excited. It takes alot for me to be surprized. Today I was in heaven. i took a trip with some friends of mine to the roaring twenties museum. In Madison county today. I had such a great time I did not want it to end. I stopped in a junk yard in Culpepper before going to the museum( I needed some interior light switches) Then off to the museum. I took some friends of mine and they were so shocked to see cars that they had only seen in magazines. They saw Chandler's, Durant's, hupmobles, Essex, Studebakers, Dodge brothers. The list goes on and on. I will attemp to show you pic's however there was so much I did not get pic's of because I was listening to Ms. Martha our tour guide talk about her fine collection. All you guyu's that are in Virginia should be here twice a year. Quote
1940plymouth Posted November 11, 2010 Report Posted November 11, 2010 Thanks for the photos, sure sounds as if you guys had a great time Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted November 12, 2010 Author Report Posted November 12, 2010 Here are some more shots. She also had radios, washing machines. Every kind of antique you could name. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted November 12, 2010 Author Report Posted November 12, 2010 She had this thing called a fly swat that was a windup device used to keep fly's off food at the dinner table in the 20' and 30's All the hood ornaments you can name with hub caps from the 20's and 30's Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted November 12, 2010 Author Report Posted November 12, 2010 Hey Bob these cars were so old that our 1940 Plymouth would look like a modern era car next to them. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted November 12, 2010 Report Posted November 12, 2010 Great pictures, Rodney, thanks for posting them. Quote
dezeldoc Posted November 12, 2010 Report Posted November 12, 2010 Looks like a good time was had Rodney, fun to see all the history. Quote

moparbenny Posted November 12, 2010 Report Posted November 12, 2010 i always wanted to go there thanks for sharing the pics:) Quote
RobertKB Posted November 12, 2010 Report Posted November 12, 2010 I have been to a couple of similar museums in my neck of the woods. I just love the unsophisticated museums like that as the items seem more real than in a sterile setting. Thanks for posting the pictures of your trip. Places like that really are a time machine and make you realize that we are all products of our past. That is why I like the feel of an original car or one kept reasonably close to original. It literally transports you back in time. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted November 12, 2010 Author Report Posted November 12, 2010 RobertK I wish I could have taken you and alot of my forum friends there. She had this parlor, in it were toys, chairs, pictures of here family. She said that her family had been there(on that location) since the 1600. She said the king of england appropiated the land for them. Her staoy is a great one. She said that during the hay day of sunday driving. She would have 100 people waiting to tour the place. This museum is not far from Skyline drive and Lurray taverns. I feel so lucky to know her. I am going back in the spring. She had this Canadian car there I know you know what this car is, it had a very interesting story behind it. I got a chance to touch it;) Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted November 12, 2010 Author Report Posted November 12, 2010 She also had tractors and buckvoard wagans. The tractors were steet wheel and rubber. I did not know that Kauser Fraser had a walk behind plow as did Graham paige. THESE CAR MAKERS WERE INTO FARM EQUIPMENT. Quote
Chester Brzostowski Posted November 12, 2010 Report Posted November 12, 2010 Very cool, I didn't know such a place existed near us. I will have to take a trip over. Tks Chet... Quote
Jim Yergin Posted November 12, 2010 Report Posted November 12, 2010 Rodney, Glad to hear you had a good time. I am sorry I couldn't join you. I ended up having to go into the office and work. Our local woodie club visited the place about 15 years ago. Glad to see it is still in operation. Thanks for posting the pictures. You mentioned Luray Caverns, have you been to the car musuem there? It is quite a collection. Jim Yergin Quote
busycoupe Posted November 12, 2010 Report Posted November 12, 2010 Rodney, the museum looks fascinating! I pass through Virginia occasionally. Could you give us an address or website for the museum so that we could find it? Thanks, Dave Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted November 12, 2010 Author Report Posted November 12, 2010 http://roaring-twenties.com/roaring_twenties.htm Let's see if this works. You know I should try to keep this to myself;) Naw, I'll share Quote
busycoupe Posted November 12, 2010 Report Posted November 12, 2010 Thanks! I'll put it on my "must see" list. Dave Quote
moparbenny Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 I know this is an old post ..(people on the hamb don't like it when.i do this but this was one of my favs so oh well..) how do they keep the cars from going to pot when they are parked on gravel like that? hartung's cars were on gravel..and they were not in the best of shape..when they got out of his barn..do they rotate them? sprinkle ferry dust? what is there sercet? Plymouthy Adams Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 my barn is pack dirt floor..I park my cars in there but on a moisture barrier....I have a few out of doors..lot of cars here had never seen the inside of a shop/garage except for repair work, most spent their time out on the road and lots spent their time on dirt and later were resuced from a field or a dirt floor barn..I would say as long as the car is off the dirt and you have room for air circulation..its not as bad as one thinks..kinda like your house..the crawl space is ventilated..in the old days none had vapor barrier plastic.. Don Coatney Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 I know this is an old post ..(people on the hamb don't like it when.i do this but this was one of my favs so oh well..) This is not the HAMB. I personally think it is great when old threads come to life because it shows me that you are doing your own homework and not asking others to do the forum search, looking for information that has been posted many times before. Keep bringing these old threads to life Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted June 7, 2012 Author Report Posted June 7, 2012 I will try to get back there this summer. I have not been in touch with Ms. Martha. I have to call her. If gas prices contimue to fall another trip might be in order. Hey Joe, I am planning a trip to Leon's in a week. I have been liquidating all that stuff down the country. I am almost finished:) Quote
mach0415 Posted June 10, 2012 Report Posted June 10, 2012 (edited) I think its cool that Essex made a truck. The 1920s and 1930s are my favorite era. I attribute that to spending time with my grandfather as a little kid, looking at automobile pictures of this era. He was born in 1917, so he remembered a good many of these cars and had an appreciation for them. Years later, so do I. Edited June 10, 2012 by mach0415 Quote
